Exhaust problems

I was on the highway sunday doing about 85mph when all of the sudden my 2001 c240 lost power and the check engine light began to blink. I was like ohh crap. So i pull over and i hear something jiggling in the exhaust and the car it putting like camaro ss. So i figure what happened was that my catalytic went or there is something clogging my exhaust system. So i turn off the car and then restart her and she sounds a whole lot better. I was able to drive her home slowly but the car still didnt have the power it usually has. So right now my c240 is MIA and awaiting my fathers return.

My father is a mechaninc but he is unfortunately out of the country now so he cant fix it and i'm like dam. I talked to him and he said that a few other c classes have come to his shop with the same problem. Anyone here have the same problem and if so about how much did it cost to repair?

Wish I could chime in with some helpful info, but fortunately for me, I haven't experienced this. From how you describe it, doesn't sound like a normal problem I've heard of.

Good thing is that your Dad is a mechanic and you won't be worrying 'bout getting charged an arm and a leg to figure out the problem and have it fixed! That's more than a lot of people have available to them.

[QUOTE=elchinocache]i hear something jiggling in the exhaust QUOTE]

Sometimes the baffles in the mufflers or cat come loose and block the exhaust flow. You can go underneath the car and bang on them with your hand to find which one is broke. Just looked on the web and the front and rear mufflers are one assembly....$216. I bet its $350 from MB.

Cat or Muffler

If it is the cat I would question the quality of the fuel you are getting. They normally don't smelt-down unless you are running super-rich or getting leaded gasoline.

If it's the muffler it seems to me that MB is either getting poor quality mufflers that bust welds internally or they are too small and excessive backpressure/flow is tearing them apart internally.

It would be interesting to dissect the muffler with a saw and see what has broken free.

Exhaust upgrades?

Teach me a thing or two, guys. I wanna change the way the thing looks and preferrably the way it sounds, unless that part's gonna cost more than a couple hunred bucks. So what are my options and how much does each cost?

Sorry, but you've opened yourself up.

First thing I'm gonna teach you is based on this movie:
LINK: POSTING AND YOU

Second thing I'm gonna teach you is a very valubale tool on these forums:
LINK: Sticky Thread "How to Search this and other MBWorld forums"

Third thing I'm going to "show" you is the amount of threads that came up based on an "exhaust" search in the "w203 forum" exclusively:
LINK: Search for "exhaust" in w203 forum

Last thing I'm going to teach you is that mods are not "cheap" (especially with reference to any Mercedes Benz). Now, since you've got an '02 320, you can do something as simple as 1) remove the resonator and replace with straight pipe 2) put a generic oval tip/dual oval/round, whichever is your preference. If you're looking to spend $200 or less, this is probably the best option for you. Straight pipe and removal of resonator might cost you $100 or so (may be less, may be more depending on how good the shop is and/or prices in your area)

If you replace the muffler and tips and/or more than that, expect to pay more than $200. That's just the reality of it. $250 is on the low end of doing a custom exhaust (w/piping) with generic/universal muffler. Mid-$500's and up is what it costs for direct replacement mufflers by reputable companies who make mufflers specified for the vehicles (search will REALLY help with that).

So it depends on what you want really, but if you don't like reading or are too lazy to use the search, I'd expect either no replies or flaming. I hope the info I gave you can be helpful for your future posts on here.

mj50, I've been asking around and Remus went bankrupt from what I understand. I know it was basically Sebring, but they closed the Remus brand name from what I've researched.

Really? I didn't realize the C55 exhaust has separate piping. This entire time I thought it was a Y pipe design.
