Anyone else upset that their mercedes sounds...
The purpose of this thread (my first) is to simply hear about what other peoples c230 kompressors sound like. I'll share what mine sounds like.
I own a 2002 c230 coupe. 4 cylinders and supercharged. sounds great at anything above 3000 rpm, it whistles down the road. But when I start my car up, it sounds like a 1997 honda civic with a rod knock. Well, maybe not quite that bad, but its almost embarassing sometimes, cruising sucks in this car. Now if your with me on this let me know. Am I the only one? Keep in mind, my car is certified through mercedes benz, has 54000 miles on it, and they say it is perfectly normal for this car to sound like a diesel sometimes.
Please provide some feedback. Thanks and happy motoring.
c230 coupe, black , totally stock at the moment. watch out though.

my 04 230 with the m271 sounds like a diesel at idle, especially at startup; it is embarassing.
I heard an old model slk the other day (same engine as your coupe?) with what looked like a stock exhaust and it sounded great - I think he was at WOT tho.

I had the same problem with my 93 RX7 twin turbo (which I still have...)
People use to point at me, laugh and make fun of my "vacuum cleaner" sound.
They laughed - until I asked them if they would like to put up pinks against their large displacement V8's.
I finally fixed the "wheez" with my own custom built exhaust, a little extra (ahem..) boost and some very nice sounding blow off valves.
It still sounds like a vacuum cleaner - with ********* and on steroids.

Too many to list
Same sound here at start up...even with my remus muffler at the end. It's not the muffler or exhaust system that is the culprit of that ugly diesel sound; it's the whole 1.8L supercharged engine itself. Embarrassing sometimes....urgghhhhh!

One with 4 wheels
Hmm....my M272 V6 sounds fine at startup, but could sound much better if I got a Remus exhaust...
I also wished the engine had a little bit more of a growl though druing acceleration........

thanks for the feedback guys. I guess we just have to deal with that diesel sound.
Hopefully the brabus exhaust im looking at will help, but its the front end noise that sounds horrible at idle and low rpms, maybe the exhaust will drown it out a tad.

I know what you are talking about. Guys he has the 2.3L 4 cyl Kompressor not the 1.8L!
I have heard other people mention the 2.3L idles very rough and sounds weird at low RPM. I guess it's a common problem on the older C230's.

ctc230k is right. I have the 2.3 4banger superchaged engine. (sounds funny to call my benz a "4banger") lol.
Again, thanks for the replies guys.

since we are on this topic I had to throw this in there:
"So let me get this straight, your Mercedes has 1.8 liters whereas my bottle of Mountain Dew has 2?"

Please search the forum for this. It has been discussed countless times back in the days when M111 (4-cyl 2.3L) was still in production. In short - they all do that; rough sound at start (~first 45 sec) is caused by a bypass valve directing compressed air straight to the exhaust in order to bring the cat to its nominal operating temperature as quickly as possible.

2014 C250 sport
Mercedes engines have never been very refined sounding at low revs, even the V8's. My cousin had a 2000 C230 sedan, and when idling it sounded fine, but once the engine got off idle, it sounded like a diesel, clacking and rattling away. One of the worst sounding engines at idle is one of my relatives 2001 SL500, which idles very diesely and very loud, odd for a V8. We've had C230 kompressors('05 1.8's) and C230 V6's as loaners. The kompressor has an odd resonance right off idle, and from what I remember, on cold starts, it made some weird rattling noises. The C230 V6 doesn't sound and feel as smooth as it should at idle and low revs, which is surprising since it's a brand new engine. It also makes some of the odd resonances the 1.8 4 makes. This could be because of it's high compression ratio though....

2005 C230 SS
I have a 2005 C230 SS and I know that after my car being off for more than 12 hours or so the car does sound like a diesel when it starts. When the car is a bit warm the car does sound a lot nicer at start up.
Love it when driving though!
