Angry Check Engine! Grrrrrrrrrr

Like if I haven't had enough already...

So I was accelerating, actually quite strong from a stop position (0) to what I can think was somewhere around 65~70mph. Of course it was quite hard (I mean, still within the revs) and after I hit that mark I let go of the gas and the check engine lit up

Methinks it could be a sensor only but I really don't know jack about cars. There are no malfunctions though. Is that normal? I've accelerated the car like that before and everything is good.

FYI: I have a C230 2002 Coupe Automatic.

Either take it to Autozone for a free reading or get a code reader for $80-120. Since it's a Mercedes, it might be worth it to go ahead and buy one - it'll get enough use.

Then get the code, so at least you'll know what the problem is. And your dealer wouldn't be able to tell you differently. Also, if you clear it, there's always the chance that it'll not come back, and it was a one-time blip.

I tend to enjoy this part of the forum. helping each other out. However, in order to help you, we need some info. The mileage on the car, do you feel any symptons, Say a stagger, tough starting, or reduction in gas mileage?

Get back to us with some data. Truly the best way is by giving us the OBD II code that you can get with the scanner mentioned above.

Help us out to Help yourself. The Closed Loop operation of MBZ is quite safe, so I don't think you'll do severe damage by driving it a bit.

SCHOK, do you think that as an adult you can present your input in a mature way?

Thanks!

True, I was very angry and I should've put more info.

Ok, so I can't really feel anything different from before and after, although I haven't drove the damn thing too fast because I'm afraid something worst may happen. I do admit it was uncalled for how I suddenly accelerate but c'mon is a Benz . My car is a c230k auto with roughly 63k miles on it. I can't really anything different, no stagger, tough starting (more than what already is) or any other indication... Weird thing is that I checked the oil for giggles with the hu display yesterday and it was fine. This morning, in the same spot, before I crank my car up said that it needed 1.5qts... after I came to work checked it again and it was fine... granted I never checked the oil that way I'm not sure which is a good way to do it.

I'll drive by autozone tomorrow to get the message check... I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks!

I Dont Know Wehre You Live But If It Is Getting Cooler At Night Your Oil May Simply Be Condensing From Being Cold In The Morning. Sensors Are Just Stupid Chips That Read Literally Not Actually.

I worked at Merecedes for 2 years and this happens all the time. One thing you might check is your gas cap. Make sure it is tightened all the way. If it was loose it will take 150-200 miles for the engine to go threw a complete cycle and turn the check engine lamp off.

Well, I thought it was going to be worst (like replacing the MAF or something expensive). I went to Advance Autoparts and I used their reader. Got the following message:

DTC (Codes)
P0130
O2 Sensor
Circuit Malfunction
(Bank 1 Sensor 1)

What stuff could happen as a result of having a bad o2 sensor? (Besides the environment but that's a different story - I don't live in CA )

Engine runs too rich....wastes gas, increases carbon buildup, fouls plugs, ruins catalytic converters, performance is degraded. Did you try clearing the code and turn off the CEL?

Not to thread hijack but I agree with you that this CEL is irritating. This happened to me about 2 weeks ago... I have been very busy and haven't had time to go to the dealer yet but haven't noiced any difference in performance... it is annoying as I only have 9K miles on the odo. I'm hoping it's the gas cap and will go away eventually like c230mb05 posted above.

Yep, did you clear the code? If it comes back you are going to have to change that O2 sensor. At least if you take it in to the dealer to have the work done, they can't jerk you around with what is going on.

So I finally cleared the code and ran fine for about 15 miles. Them the CEL came back. I guess my O2 sensor is really messed up.

Is it expensive? anyone care to adventure a part number? (c230k coupe, 2002 -auto)

THanks

I don't know the part number, but if you go to a MB parts counter, they will get it for you. I don't know what the access point looks like, but a wrench should get that baby off. Then undo the wiring harness to it.

Only problem would be if the Unit is frozen into the bung. PB Blaster can help get the old one out. Whatever you do, DONT ROUND THE Nut part.

Don't guess....did it throw the same code?...Front OxSens = $168 on line and make sure you have a wrench that fits correctly (22mm?). A special tool is made for it but not really needed if you are careful. You can get an equivalent sensor MUCH cheaper but you need to splice in a new lead/connector.

ok, so I did clear the code and came back again, same code so I assume it is indeed the O2 sensor (P0130, bank 1 sensor 1), so I call my stealership and cordially asked him to quote me the price for the O2 sensor, gave him my VIN and he said "which one? the front or the back?" I was like whaaaaaa? I didn't know the sucker had two, which is not a big deal if the price wasn't twice as much!!!!!!!! the front one is $139, the back one is $390!!! Any of you experts know is p0130 is the front or the back one (I am just hoping is the front one!, wherever that is)
