My 1st benz

just wanted to say wasup. i picked up my 1st benz last week and this car is awesome. 2007 c280 4matic, loaded with everything except nav but i live in a small city so i don't need it lol... im basically new with benz, my last car was a 03 gti 1.8t and this car is 100x better...

so far i onli have 1 question, usually when i see MB and BMW, the front rims are more dirty then the rear. is it becasuse of the brake pads they use? mine is like that too!!!

really clean! i like! I used to help my friend wash his BMW...there were so many stains that did not come off the rims...I was supposing either this stuff was cooked on for a while (he tends to not wash it much)...or BMW has some brake dust equivalent to permanent marker ink heh...but on my '03 C230...i notice that there is a lot of brake dust in the front (considering more brake pressure is applied to the front)....recently on my 01 RX300 though...after I changed the pads and rotors (I made the mistake of getting Brembo rotors and putting some cheap brake pads on)...now I get so much more brake dust...so I'm thinking its the brake pads that are doing all this dirt.

yea i think european car has heavy brake force on front wheels, it stop better and bigger disc brake. On my BMW X3, is not only front, front and rear is dirty as hell, and just like ur friend's bimmer, the brake dust wont able to wash off...

Yes, the German car companies use softer brakes which perform better, but give off more dust and also wear more quickly. I highly recommending washing your rims (at least front if you don't have much time) once a week. Seriously, it takes 15 minutes and your car will thank you. If you let it accumulate it will cause pitting and will become impossible to take off without harsh chemicals.

Also, as with many things in life, the key is regular maintenance. If you just do this once a week, you can just use regular car shampoo mixed with water and some kind of non abrasive sponge or brush. Don't use harsh chemicals, even wheel cleaners that are "safe" are much more harsh than regular car soap, so just use that and keep it up.

And congrats on your car! You will be very happy, although you are now scared for life since you will not be able to drive anything other than a Benz.

Congrats on the switch over. You won't be sorry. I started just a few years back with a C230 myself. Upgrade every few years ...

thanks for the welcome guys, i definetly will wash them atleast once a week now since they will build up and wont come off. lol.... so far the only mod i plan on doing for this summer if i can save up enough money is rims, but im gonna change the pads when i do so...

yea those are stock 17" i got a primo deal on this car, it came with about $6,000 worth of upgrades because they wanted to sell them

H/K sound system
17" rims
cd changer
sunroof
diamond black metallic paint (midnight blue during the day)

pretty sure im missing something just cant remember it all... thanks again

Mercedes once had hard pads that would last over 50,000 miles and left no more dust on the front wheels than on the rear. Quite a few years ago our federal government put in a requirement for stopping if your brake power booster failed. They specified a maximum pressure that would be required for stopping. Apparently, the way the manufacturers achieved this was by putting soft pads on the front.

The undesirable results of these soft pads were the dust can damage the wheels, short brake pad life and faster wear on the rotors.
The faster wear of the rotors is due to the heavy brake dust acting like a grinding compound.

Thanks a lot for the info...too bad I recently changed my brake pads with the OEM MB pads arghhh...another 20k or 25k miles till i correct my mistake ...hope to get some drilled/slotted rotors next time doing my brakes...

btw since we're somewhat talking about brakes...I recently gave the car to my dad to take in to the dealer for maintenance and I have no idea what he told them but he said he was having problems with his ABS....Brake like sensors...or something and I looked on the receipt for any extra work and they replaced a couple of sensors and bled my brakes! haha. finally...stealership gets stolen from!

Welcome to the MB family!

Only "bad" news to give you is the fact that there is not much on performance for the 4-matics, however, I'm sure you'll find many other things that will work for your car.

I suggest checking out all the stickies at the top of the forum, regardless of whether you mod the car or not.

As for the brakes, it's very common for the fronts to get more dirty than the rears, however, that's why many people upgrade to non-OEM pads (i.e. Porterfield, Akebono, etc...) on stock rotors.

Welcome, and congrats on the car. Love the color choice

I am still waiting for mine to be delivered. I will be a 1st time Benz owner as well.

As far as the brakes, as others have said, that is normal. Just ditch the OEM pads when the brakes wear out, problem solved

thanks guys!!! and thanks for the info on the brakes when srping hits ill change up the pads, probably to PBR dustless. i had them on my last car and they were awesome...

well b4 i had got this car i was looking at going for sport (05 Subaru STI) or luxury, so since i went this route i knew i wasnt gonna do a bunch of mods to it except for rims and maybe some little things jus for show. i mean 230hp is plenty for a car thats not gonna be raced at all... since i am looking to put some rims on maybe this summer, does ne one know if the c-class will fit 20"?? or maybe even photoshop these. thanks

oh and johnand, hope u love the car as much as i do. im pretty happy i didn't go with the STI

20" will fit, but it will cause big problems if the wheels are not the right size or offset (rubbing on fender or shock)
most people go with 19's and slam it to the ground!

i think there 2.5" lip... wat are the the offsets i should be looking for?? the bolt patters are 5X112 right? would 19x8.5 front and 19x9.5 rear be perfect size for these cars, i don't plan on lowering it ne time soon.
