HELP!!! C320 Fuel Cutoff, Muffler Rattling

Alright, my car was towed yesterday after it became undrivable, but let me recap how it got to this point and hopefully you guys can help identify the problem (or speculate).

I switched on my car yesterday and I heard a loud rattle; almost as if under the car, in the middle of the exhuast there was a peice of metal shaking. I called the dealership and they said their service department was just closing, therefore if the problem persists I should call roadside.

Drove about four blocks and reved, and heard the noise again. So I called roadside, told them about the noise and their response was - 'it's a shield that goes around the muffler and it's probably lose and rubbing against the muffler'. But they indicated it's okay and when the car goes in for service B (scheduled Tues. - and 1,500 miles over ) they'll fix it for me. Fine, drove to the store and back home. Finally was leaving home again later in the evening and suddenly the Check Engine light came on. Called Roadside, they said it's cause the emissions aren't upto standard but if the car is driving then it's fine. They told me a trick to turn the light off (by a steering wheel pattern). Didn't work, but finally got on the highway, and suddenly the car just 'stalled' (it was still on), but it was as if there was a fuel cutoff. It didn't go above 54 miles per hour. It felt like the life just came out. Pulled over to the side, waited on the phone for 1 hr. and then got a tow truck to come get me (another 1 hr.).

So now the car is at the dealership, until Monday when they'll get in and assess the problem. So basically guys, what the hell is wrong with my car!?!!?!?!

My guess.....

a baffle in one of the mufflers came loose and has clogged the exhaust flow. Requires muffler replacement.

Wow - a totally new muffler? Is there a chance they would try and uncongest the current one?

possibly bro, which dealer do you go to?

My ML was stalling about 3 weeks back? i posted on the 163 forums, floored the car and seemed like it was a 2 liter inside. then the CEL came on, bought it into mb-manhattan, they replaced a few things,

connector pins at MAF, engine oil temperature sensor, throttle replacement/position sensor and switch,

hope i can help

First of all this was just a guess based on your symptoms.....and no, I don't believe MB uses repaired/recon parts.

Wow, I took it to MB Larchmont (they always tow to the nearest dealership). I guess I'll find out the problem on Monday, I just hope it isn't something major.

Hey guys, for all those who helped calm my nerves, well after the whole of yesterday and today, I found out that it was the catalytic converter that needed to be replaced, they are working on installing that now and hopefully once installed the car will be okay.

I'm surprised that it failed already, car has 34K miles on it, so it's interesting that it had problems already, but hopefully the car will have no other issues like this.

Good to hear that it was just your cat...nothing too serious...I'm guessing yours went out quick because everything is built differently...some better quality than others...or maybe you should take the 100 pound weight off your gas pedal haha

Thanks dude, I'll post up the Service Sheet as per your request advans.

I must say, I picked up the car and when I go over bumps, I hear the exhaust shake/rattle a little, like it's not tight. Looks like it might be going back already!

Otherwise the car works fine and obviously, the Check Engine lights is not on anymore.

Haha, not yet, gotta finish everything (2005 blinkers, grille, head-lights). By the way, these door sills, are they an easy install? Those directions from Formymercedes.com don't look to simple. I ain't trying to pay BestBuy/Circuit City for this!

Alright we'll do it Saturday then. In the morning I'm going to pick up the 2005+ Side Mirror Blinkers from the dealership, so I'll come right after.

Yeah, I have factory Bi-Xenons, but didn't they change the front headlamps in 2005+... it looks like they've got a separation between the blinker part and the headlight... am I seeing things??
