Is this a scam? Check Engine Light

Went to a local shop (Not a Mercedes Dealership) to have my car scan due to the Check Engine Light. Had a friend drove my S-Class so i wouldn't wait long if i had to and i can simply leave and come back. Later, the tech says it received a code P200B and that i need to change the right camshaft position sensor and that the left might be going bad as well. I am not sure if the tech is BSing or not, maybe he wants to make more money figuring that i have two cars.

What do you guys think?

E has been very helpful and provided me this website and i see no part/code# P200B. http://www.robisonservice.com/servic...erc_faults.asp
Any additional information would help, i'm trying to stay away from Mercedes Dealership for now. I know having a CEL will not cause an explosion anything in that nature, i jsut want to get it solved. Thanks in advance.

if you dont know the guy from the local shop. u better off just going back to benz and have them tell you what the problem is. not knowng someone at any garages = instant rape in your wallet.

so first off you have a 2004 W203 with the 271 engine correct? (black top inline 4 cylinder)..

I am not seeing any kind of bulletins for that fault code. Did he tell you what the fault code actually said?

Unfortunately, i might have to revisit Mercedes Dealership.

Yes, that is correct, i do have the 271 engine and i too don't see that fault code. Which makes me think the tech knows nothing or is trying rob my wallet.

the only time my check engine light came on, it went away after i turned on and off my car few times. but few days later my crank position sensor went bad. had to replace it with a new one. when this happens your car shuts off on you while you are driving. lol maybe thats what he ment when he said the camshaft position sensor.

Going to get a second opinion/check. Problem is, Mercedes Dealership charges 115 dollars plus tax just to do a simple scan. I'm guessing it's just a simple sensor that's broken. Car runs fine still =)

You can BUY a scanner at your local discount parts store for $60.00 that will give you basic codes, and there is a website that will de-code them for you... something like OBDI.com. Not sure if that is correct...
