A thing that really concerns me though is this event:
I was in the parking lot finding parking to go eat at Sizzler's and I ride my car in "W" (or for some of you, "C") mode now. So I was in 2nd gear around 15mph or so about to get into my parking spot, and all of a sudden I feel a shudder for 2 seconds (I don't know how else to describe it except this way...which most manual trans. drivers would know....the shudder was similar to that feel when you're in a low speed attempting to accelerate but you have it in a high gear). This shudder happened about 3 times this weekend and it has me worried. I am doing a transmission flush soon...but I am also wondering (reason I chose to post on this thread) who else has had this "Defective Valeo Radiator" problem? Because I am hoping day in day out I don't have it...warranty just ran up about 5 months ago.
ive got that too!!!, whenever i get to the first stop light on my way out of my housing complex, the car shakes while idling, and then when it turns green and i gas it feels like im in a manual and dont know how to shift properly (note, mine only happens when i'm in first gear, which makes it VERY noticeable (the car lurches forward and back like a person who doesn't know how to drive stick is driving)... odd thing is is when i feel it start to happen, i take my foot of the gas for a split second then try again and it'll catch and ride fine. and it'll only happen within the first like 2-3 minutes of startup

You better get that checked out, if you are lucky its something else or its the leak and maybe you catch it in early stages where the trans will still be OK. Don't wait with this and don't want to replace trans on this car!

Also the trans module has the ability to adapt and some times it adapts the torque converter incorrectly. The only way to test that is to clear out the adaptations and if the problem goes away then it is the control module. If it does not go away it is the radiator.

PS, in my case the adaptations were mostly corrective of the trans issues. After clearing them out the trans felt like wanting to disintegrate. After maybe 5 miles it started to compensate.

I got a new radiator put it and the coolant and transmission fluid flushed, so if its still the leak then we have a huge problem lol, but it could be my torque converter? mercedes recommended i get a new one for about 3,000 and i stuck my tounge out at them and walked away, the 2nd shop i took it too said the torque converter wasn't necessary.. just swapped the radiator and flushed the fluids

So? What happened? Did MBUSA help you out Rex or did you get the bill?

Sorry to revive an old post, haven't been on the forums in a while.

2 years later, I still have the same vehicle and it now has ~62K miles.

MBUSA ended up covering the cost of parts, but I had to pay for labor. Parts were ~$3000, so i paid $4000 in labor. A week afetr getting the car back, it still had rough shifting in stop/go traffic, and also when shifting from 1st to second gear. Sometimes, the shift is rough that the car jerks. I took the car back to the dealer that did the repair at that time but they said there wasn't anything wrong.

Also, a couple of time, after shifting the car ni reverse, then putting it back in drive, the car acts like its in neutral: i press on gas and engine revs but no motion. THis has happened 2-3 times in the last two years, and the dealer says they can't find anything wrong.

I've since been going to a different dealer for maintenance and repairs and brought up the rough shifting (which has been ongoing, but not really any worse) and they said they can't find anything wrong.

wow thats massed up. what was changed for the $3k in parts? Was the trans and torque converter replaced? Both of these were replaced in my. About 15k miles later now (I drive very little) and still going strong. And I do beat the hell out of it, had to replace my rear tires after 6k miles

Did anyone ever check for oil at TCU (Transmission Control Unit) - under front passenger kickplate carpet?

Also, try resetting transmission adaptation to factor setting by following these steps:
- place key in and turn to position 2 (without starting car)
- with transmission still in Park, press gas pedal to floor (kickdown mode) for 5 seconds
- turn key to off position but do not take key out of ignition
- release foot from gas pedal
- wait 2 minutes then start car as usual

Report back,.... hopefully sooner than 2 years from now!

Darius..I will need to dig out my service invoice to give you the exact prciing break down on the parts, but they replaced the torque convertor, radiator, and transmission.

Sunny...I am wondering if there is oil in the TCU, because when my car was under warranty and I was having rough shifting issues, this was one of the first things the dealer checked and ended up replacing way before they told me I had glycol contamination.

However, i haven't asked the dealer specifically to check this recently.

And thanks for posting how to reset the adaptation

Check out post#14 by Glyn,.... showing location of TCU,... very easy to check yourself,... just pull up the carpet,... 3 little nuts holding down that steel kickplate,... TCU is on other side of kickplate
https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...ml#post3392897

My photos attached show TCU with 2 plugs at top,... (with key OUT of ignition and car off),... take off 2 plugs and examine for any signs of oil,... also examine all wires in the area for signs of oil (wet - greasy),... if found then spray with CRC QD Electronic Cleaner,.... and be sure to spray the wire going to TCU towards transmission pilot bushing adapter (the one towards the centre console). Oh, being totally **** I placed lots of oil absorbent towel in the area,.. just in case if one day the transmission pilot bush adapter starts leaking again,... and oil wicks its way towards TCU.

Attached is photo of inside of TCU,... if you get this fair, spray a bit of CRC QD electrical cleaner on it, even if there is no oil. And let dry before putting everything back together. Oil is not conductive of electricity so it will not cause a short,... but it does mess up the strength of the signals,... which confuse the TCU.

Did your car ever have leaking cam magnet sensor,... oil going through main harness to ECU or O2 sensor,...

Thanks for all the info/pics Sunny. I haven't been able to check the TCU yet. As for the leaking cam magnets, funny you should mention that:

I have a bad feeling they never did any of things you paid for.
Probably only needed a fluid FLUSH from the beginning.

If they did everything they say they did:

This 1st to 2nd problem & the reverse was common at one time both accelerating & braking quickly to a stop where the whole propshaft was inclined to clonk when approaching standstill. This was due to change down to first before stopping & slow release of the TC lock up clutches. It was fixed by a new software flash to the TCU.

Things to check.

- Does your car have the newer reflashable TCU? You are right at the changeover period
- Is there a fluid leak at the electrohydraulic pilot bush with fluid wicking up the harness to the TCU?
- Have they checked that the first to second gear one way clutch is not damaged?
- Is there a sticking valve in the valve body & when they run adaptions with Star are all lockup pressures for each gear in spec?
- Did they check that the TC lockup clutch is in good order?

Presume that the correct fluid has been used & that level is correct vs.temperature.

Good luck!

thats why someone needs to invent a video camera that goes under the car and in the hood to watch these mechanics...thats why i always wait at my shop for any repair and always check their work

someone put a tape recorder on the side door of their new camaro brought it to the chevy dealership and caught the idiots talking about destroying his clutch...what to do u know they reved it up put it in drive ..and out goes his clutch (its online)
