Mig888,

What you need is someone with Solidworks who can scan the original part and modify it to suit the application.

Then all they do is press PRINT to an SLA machine and out comes the item in perfect dimensions, new, clean and ready to paint.

But your way is more fun !

Actually, for work, I do know people who use Solidworks. Have you heard of a company called 3D Rapid Prototyping? Their mother company supplies the printers and composites to just print a 3D part... but the cost of doing this for a headunit frame? Im afraid not, lol. And yes, this was way more fun!

flip

Then again, they had this gun that looked like binoculars that can scan any 3D object into CADsoft... I wanted it.

Faux Show!

Well I'm kinda pleased . Of course, I'll be without audio (damn!) for a while - I'm gonna wheel around with this thing on to get myself acquainted with a NAV in my car... it was weird at first and after an hour I wanted it wired up. I'll be patient though.

Here are live, installed shots:

I now plan to drive up to the installer to tell them that I want the outcome looking and sitting exactly like this. I enjoyed building the frame because in essence it's a self-preview of what you're gonna get - no surprises and in my eyes, very aesthetically pleasing with the rest of the dash. Everything protrudes just as much as the stock radio did.

Your opinions are very welcome, cheers!

Believe me, if I had those fabrication skills, these pictures would be of an engine bay - until then bro, just fun small stuff on the side. Besides, what'd this cost me...mostly time. Maybe $5 because I used material from the scoop project oh and the spare (now junked) radio I cannibalized.

Lol, thank you sir - we'll see about those cards - I'm stacked on all kinds of other projects/installs in the meantime.

Many thanks to you for the fabbing ideas! I'm glad you have just as much patience with your own projects, lol.

I'm actually lucky I waited this long - my bro found a can of this 'rubber' coating stuff that gives it this textured sheen. Glad you like it...and yes, IMO looks much more sleeper than a basic dash kit.

Definitely right, calling Rusnak tomorrow about those part numbers. LOL this never ends.

Thank you - it's exactly how I wanted it to turn out. Mindbogglingly OEM-style.

LOL, very happy you approve bro - yeah, got the VM... I'll do it. Now I can't exactly bring it to the audio shop in this project's current form because... I don't have anything for them to install, other than a basic wiring job, so I'll hold off. I plan to obtain the following in a timely manner (keyword: plan)..

Alpine PDX 1.600 (for a single XTANT X10)
Alpine PDX 4.150 (for the Qs)
MBQ Q-Line Components (how many? rear fill?)
and an OEM 5th speaker center channel that goes above in the parktronic area. The headunit is itself capable of a 6.1 speaker config, but I don't know if I'll push it that far...that's all up to the audio guys. Apparently I'm looking for absolute clarity and punch with minimal cargo space/weight used, but I'm open to anyone's opinion at this point.

The way I see it, the cost of the part is not that much. It would have cost about 200 dollars or so to get the first one out. But the thickness of the main supporting areas would have been a bonus.

compare that to the headunit cost and all that. I assume that you modified the VITO part which fits the W203 perfectly.

As a one off drawing you could have made the Solidworks model freeware and then anyone who wants to modify the drawing or add extra design features could have made variants.

One of these days I am going to digitally scan the 2005 W203 headunit face and the W211 headunit face and make a face for the W211 headunit which may fit into the W203.

I have been looking carefully at the japanese design of the W203 and I notice that there is indeed a bracket for the massive W211 audio gateway to fit into the W203 (left trunk void behind fuse box).

So I congratulate you on the design and i hope you expand your results more in the future. I hear that maybe there is a steering interface coming for that.

The noise is from a camera's ISO...not the actual screen. Pictures don't do the setup justice.
