So.. my key went for a swim.. in the toilet!

Yup.

My baby bro.. 2 years old, got ahold of the key... and threw it in the toilet.. and flushed it!

LOL, so my dad takes apart the toilet, and its dangling, just about to fall. He got it out.. thank god for MB's fat keys.

The key starts the car, but I cant use the key buttons (lock, unlock, trunk release)

My MB Service Advisor quoted me $300 for an additional key. That's a lot for a key! We have a fully working key (the one we kept as a spare). Do you think I need another key?

Is there a way to revive this key?

I don't know if there is a way to revive it but you should just get the 07 key. You used to be able to get it for about $65 on oempartsdirect.com but i think now it's about $100 more, which is still cheaper than your dealer.

yah, just get the 07 key, i got mine for less than 70, but I think they raise the price, but either ways it's still gonna be way cheaper than 300

I tried looking on the website but couldn't find the key online... do any of you have a link?

And, if i do get a key from the internet...how would I program it so it works for my car?

EDIT: I found the part numbers for the key.

2117663606 ---- KEY STANDARD

2037665006 ---- BLADE SMART

Completely take it apart.

Allow it to dry.

Replace the batteries.

Key works fine.

I've washed my primary key two times now, and fallen off a boat into a lake (stone sober too, just hit a wave wrong). The thing is fine after a night drying and some fresh batteries.

Thanks guys for the advice... I'll try to take apart the key and let it dry. Btw, this incident happenned last week, so I'm guessing that the key should be dry by now?

I'm gonna try anyways.

Gently wipe down the contacts on the battery compartment before installing the new ones.

Other than that, good luck.

also remember its not the water thats the conductor that fries the electronics, its the metals and other conductive contaminants in the water. when you open it up use a q tip and get in there with some alchohol to get the residue away because that can still conduct even if water is gone.

If you drop a key in salt water, quickly flood it with fresh water, then take the key apart, remove the battery and immerse the pieces in isopropyl alcohol. Use the 99% stuff, not the cheap 70% product. In fresh water, skip the rinse, and go directly into alcohol.

Remove from the alcohol and use compressed air to dry.

+1 For the alcohol. I've heard of people's cell phones that went into the washing machine that came out and worked after being immersed and sprayed with alcohol.
