C230 7 speeds?

Ok so they call it 7 speeds, that's confusing. It's 6 forward speeds and 1 reverse, where is my 7th gear? My car shows 1-6 then D...

I remember the older Toyota Celica or whichever that replacement car i test drove a number of year back had 6 forward speeds and 1 reverse.

What up with 7 speeds???

Lastly, is there any major fuel consumption differences in Comfort vs Sport gear setting?

D is 7th gear. Put it in D when driving in 6th you will see your RPM's drop.

Putting it in C actually made my gas mileage go up by about 2 MPG.

that doesn't make sense. D is a mode of driving isn't it? not a gear, because when I am in D i go through every gear i hear it, so how can i be in 7th?

Do we have a class action again MB here? I could use a free car payment!

Just kidding

Damnit man, don't you read your owners manual? Everyone here's laughing at your ignorance .

Heres a basic layout of gear selections and what they do.

If your gear selector is in:
1 - first gear - from a stop wont leave 1st gear.
2 - second gear - from a stop goes from first to second gear.
3 - third gear - from a stop goes from first through third.
4 - fourth gear - from a stop goes from first through fourth
5 - fifth gear - from a stop goes from first through fifth
6 - sixth gear - from a stop goes from first through sixth
7 - SEVENTH GEAR - from a stop automatic transmission has full 1 - 7 gear range under automatic control. Fully Automatic Function.

The point being, that mercedes knows that since the top speed of the car cant even top out 6 gear, so why would someone use seventh and not just D anyways? 7th gear is a cruising gear, not a accelerating gear and therefore would have no purpose under enthusiast driving conditions.

Class action lawsuit because mercedes didnt design a 7 page, picture-only car manual for you?

This has to be one of the funniest, fairly "newb" posts I've seen in a while. Very well thought out reply

Pls man relax, the point of type of forum is it's good to have new users and questions. You "know it all" bunch are appreciated but why be a jerk off about someone asking a question? Will you a newbie one time? Did Michael Jackson abuse you? Chill and peace!

after driving my 7 speed auto for 6 months.. i dont think i can go back to a regular 5 speed auto anymore. a 5 speed auto to me now is like things are just dragging until it shifts up.

his reply does make sense. a lot actually. the post he was referring to was actually very funny and informative.

do you still not understand the concept of the 7 speed? or are you going to propose to sue your school district for your lack of comprehension?

I'm sure there could be lots of responses such as the one you quoted hurled in your direction, but I think most people are holding back b/c you are a newbie. just chill.

Good point. But most of us, who were noobs at one point, learned a lot quicker the meaning of STFF and RTFM before posting. HTH

You need to relax. I was just saying that his reply was funny, cuz it answered your question, but he is also somewhat "new" to the forum

Seriously, what is going on with some of the newbs nowadays. They expected to be spoon fed and when they are (even if sarcastically), they get their panties all crunched up. Unbelievable...

6 speed 7 speed 8 speed big deal people!! MB has never been good with their tranny development. THere is a new tech call DSG an atumatic with two cluctches. Zero lag! In case some of you may have not heard of DSG then check this out!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmMNRQ1GJ3o

THis is the future of all gearboxes, unless Merc change to DSG my next car will be an Audi or VW.
