I downgraded to a VW, it's still German though
Where were USA-spec C230K coupes built?

I ran the VIN, and the sticker on the car says it was made in Germany. I went to the dealer to obtain all the service records, and as the guy is pulling up all the stuff, he says," Ah, made in the US, that's good." Then gives me a bunch of papers regarding the history of my car. I know Mercedes has a plant in Alabama (along with BMW), but I thought all the C-Class cars were German built? The records I received say nothing about where the car was ultimately built.
This stuff is too blurry these days. GM and Ford are built in Canada and Mexico, and Nissan, Honda, Toyota, BMW, and some MB's are built here. The VIN's don't tell you crap anymore. A Mexican made Ford has an American VIN, and a US built Toyota has a Jap VIN. Damn that globalization. Where were the C230K Sport Coupes built? 100% German, or 30% US, 30% Mexico, 30% Canada, and 10% Germany?

The robots build the cars anyway, but I need to add data to my useless knowledge database in memory address 5FFFF in my organic CPU.

Parts come from low bid suppliers from all over the world. I know of two parts that I pulled that had the country of origin, one was from england, the other from china. So from my point of view, 50% of the car parts are made in China. Just don't lick the paint, it may contain lead.

Since you did not get any answers to your question...

I had a 2001 C coupe (good car, bad sun roof), which was made in Germany. I believe later years were produced in Brazil, too.

I checked my VIN and it said Germany and Tuscaloosa Alabama, and oddly enough I've been to that plant once.

C coupes were never built there, I think that some are built in South Africa RHD and understand that the current batch are built in Brazil.

This from Mercedes Plant website:

MBUSI Builds Exceptional Automobiles in the USA
The Mercedes-Benz M-Class Sport Utility, the new R-Class Grand Sport Tourer, and the new full-sized GL-Class Luxury Sport Utility Vehicle are all built at the Mercedes-Benz production facility near Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

position 11 in your VIN

position 11 in your VIN should indicate which production plant was used:

A-E Sindelfingen
F-H Bremen
J Rastatt

so mine was made in Sindelfingen *whatever that mean*

For anybody that cares, the Rastatt plant is in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Ja, das ist gut. Ich mag mein Deutsches gebautes Auto! Ich höre, dass die Fabrik in Alabama ein Hochtechnologie-Platz ist. Ich bin froh, dass mein deutsches Auto in Deutschland gebaut wurde.

I personally don't know much about the factory in Alabama, but since they are putting together the fairly expensive ml's, and gl's, etc, I would also think it must be a pretty technological place. But I agree with you, im also glad mine's german made.

No matter where they make MB's, they still manage maintain the time honored tradition of less than average reliability that MB has been known for. The idea that some german master craftsman in a white lab coat is putting your car together car with precision of a swiss watch makes for a good story doesn't it. The reality is they use cheap east european labor in their German plants that are no more skilled than those of south africa, alabama, china or brazil.
