The C-Class GAS MILEAGE thread

I average 18 mpg pretty consistently - 15 mile commute through heavy traffic. AC is alway set to Auto.
It's interesting that driving style seems to make more of a difference than engine type.
I've also noticed better mileage as the AMG engine "breaks in".
Or maybe I'm not using the HP as much now? I DON"T THINK SO!!!!

As it seems, our cars gets better gas mileage at higher speeds. Nonetheless, I still believe there is something wrong. I believe my SUV gets better gas mileage than my C.

I get about 20 mpg average because there are a lot of hills where I live. I get 24 mph driving to work (highway with moderate traffic) and about 26 pure highway driving at about 80 mph.
C230 - 6 spd., AC on always.

I hate the mpg on this car. If the EPA estimates were correct I would have bought another car. THis is horrible on the environment, not to mention the terroist issues.
Anyway, in the city I get about 12 to 15 mpg and on the hwy, I get about 25 mpg.
I spent the the weekend in the Sierras and on the way back from down from 9000 feet, I got 40 mpg until I hit the Central Valley. It was a blast drving the car down 9000 feet. It just loves those mountain roads.

Galaxy girl I agree with you. This is the first car I have ever owed that I don't get the maximum EPA estimate or better. It sucks gas in city driving. Maybe that's why they changed the engine for 2003. It's still the most fun car I have ever owed and luckily most of my driving is on the highway so my mileage is in the mid-20's.

Here's selected MPG stats for my C320 since September. 80% of my mileage is drive to/from work, 17 miles one way: 3.8 miles stop/go city, followed by 5.7 miles congested interstate (avg 40 mph) followed by 4.1 clear interstate (65-70mph), then 3.4 miles city stop/go to work. Average speed over 32 minute commute = 28-29 mph.
Notice that the MPG is improving over time/odo mileage:
Season-------Conditions-------Odometer----AvgSpd----MPG
Sep.2001----A/C am+pm-------4,500 mi------28mph----19.0
Nov.2001-----EC am+pm-------6,000 mi------27mph----21.1
Feb.2002----heat(a)-EC(p)-----8,200 mi------28mph----21.7
Apr.2002-----EC am+pm--------9,500 mi------29mph----22.5
Jun.2002-----EC(a)-A/C(p)----10,800 mi------29mph----22.7
Current morning commute with EC only (68 degrees) at 29mph = 24-24.5 mpg
Current afternoon commute with A/C only (90 degrees) at 28mph = 20.5-21 mpg... Yes, using A/C hurts the mileage in traffic.
If you are interested in tracking your mileage, start resetting the "after reset" page in the MFD with each fill-up and write down your end of tank trip odo (tank miles), avg speed and avg mpg in a logbook.

This is just begging for a poll. Maybe we could find the average mpg by model across a large population and variety of driving styles and conditions!

A poll would be fine, as long as everyone is using similar methods to track their mpg. The cars allow the functionality, but only a few folks here are using it to the full capabilities.

A good training movie for driving in SF is Bullitt. Saw it last week and I'm ready! I bet Detective Frank Bullitt didn't get 12-15mpg on his '68 Mustang.

It shouldn't make any difference, however it seems like I get more miles per gallon using Mobil rather than Chevron. I'll do a test on that aswell and let you know on this tread.
The results of my test regarding "EC REST" for the entire tank is as follows.
Combination of street and freeway.
325 miles
30 miles per hour average
21.0 mile per gallon
That's horrible!!
That's babying the car too!

Class C, how many miles are on your sedan? Check my post on the previous page, and compare your present odometer reading to mine (column 3), then reference my mpg to the right (your average speed is comparable to mine). My guess is your's is a relatively low mileage car and not at peak mpg. I've heard mpg will improve through 20,000 miles before levelling off.
I use Texaco. Got a bad tank of Chevron once (different car) and haven't bought Chevron since. Yes, it can happen with any brand.

I can honestly say that my friend and I have BOTH experienced increased gas mileage with Mobil 1 gas.
Food for thought.

a full tank every week @ evg 1.65 a jug.
My display shows MPG all over the map so I can't really tell how economy it is short of using pencil & paper method.
I never have it better than 21MPG based on the after long reset
Peace
