http://www.geocities.com/mercedeslighting/main.html you'd think with 11 posts you'd have read some FAQs around here by now....................................kidding :p welcome. Check out www.autobarn.com for some deals on PIAA bulbs (search google for some 5-10% off coupon codes as well)

i believe that is the size for either , bulbs or hid.

bulbs are just bulbs, you can get some that give you that xenon look and say they put out up to 110x

hid - is a lighting system with bulbs , ballasts, etc.

you should do a search on this.

The PIAA are generally regular halogen bulbs with a blue or purple tint. They don't put out anymore light than a standard bulb. If you want HID lights, they typically go for about $400 give or take. If you want in-between and slightly illegal, go for Phillips Ralley bulbs, they are 80 watts so they'll put out 80 watts of halogen light. The best halogen bulbs out there are the Phillips Vision Plus but you can only get them in Europe. Check www.autolamps-online.com, they have them for $40 shipped from the UK.

The Phillips Ralley are also available in at autolamps-online.com but remember that they are 80 watts and for off-road use only (lol). They are not blue, just 80 watts similar to what you have now in 55 watts form.

I read somewhere in the forums that the Razo's are just for show. They put out less light than stock.

I e-mailed autolamps-online.com several days ago. The response I got back said they do NOT carry/stock the Phillips Rally bulbs. If anyone hears differently, I'd like to know.

young did an excellent comparo of bulbs recently...

I just ordered the Phillips Vision Plus from Autolamps-online.com. They are supposed to be shipped out yesterday.

One question for everyone - has anyone gotten a FSS malfuntion message after installing aftermarket bulbs? The tech at the dealer said that you may get a malfunction error message that you will just have to ignore because of the fluctuation in voltage/resistance of aftermarket bulbs. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem. I have not read anything on this, yet - this does not include switching from halogen to xenons.

I also tried teh Razo bulbs.. and the vision plus are on the way. The color of the Razo is better than the stock bulbs ( partly for show) Functionality is about the same..... its just the color of things on the road are a little more blue with the razos.

One of my razos burnt out in 4 months... So i just got 1 in a box now. There is no error with the bulbs until they burn out.

I am assuming the life of the Vision Plus is as good as any other bulb. Has anyone had any problems with bulbs burning out sooner than you thought? I bought 2 pairs - in order to have extra for those just in case situations.

I don't think there has been much evolution in halogen lighting technology for a few years now, in which case bulb life decreases as the temperature increases and more watts equals higher temperature. If you're using 80 w or 100 w bulbs in a rally car, you really don't care if they don't last more than a few nights. Obviously they will go way beyond this, but it's pretty unlikely they will have as good a durability as a 50w.

Manufacturers can work some tricks with power consumption by, for example, reflecting infrared light internally back into the bulb to create more heat in the filament, equals more light for the same power draw, but generally the tinted lights that seem to be popular achieve the tint with a filter that cuts out some of the light.
