used 2002 C230K

hey all

I have been looking over the forums for a little bit and I have found some of my answers however..

1. I am going to pay 11k to 12k for it, it has 65k miles and had a small accident back in 2002 which was fully repaired. It is fully loaded I think, (I could not confirm that the car had a commander, or sports model in 2002? were those options?) the interior is immaculate but the paint has one small ding on the passenger door ( cheap cover up paint applied, not bigger the 4mm hard to see ) and a lot of swirlys all over, I think a good wax/clay bar job will clean it up nice. black on black. does this sound like a good deal?

2. what is high wear on the car, I have read about the tyranny/radiator on autos ( which dosn't matter cause this is a stick ) and about the MAF ? going bad. is there any thing else to look for.

3. what is up with the phone in the dash, please help me out on this one, as a used buyer is it just a waste of space for me? I have a verzion xv6700 ( pda phone) can that connect some how ?

4. under warranty info I notice something that says "Specific Components 8y/80k" what is this ? cause that is the only warranty still in effect.

5. also I am a aircraft mechanic by trade and work on cars a bit, still learning but can do all servicing, change brakes and diag starting problems a bit and learning more, with that in mind how hard would it be for me to work on this car if I run in to problems. what type of special tool are needed ect..

Thanks all

I think the phone is a wash. They left that system to die.

The car itself, if it is an 02 Coupe with an M111 engine is actually pretty sturdy, and easy to work on. I have aover 150k on mine. So I'd say haggle hard, and get it.

I have been haggling and I say 11k to 12k but he dosn't want to move on the 12k mark, the 11k is really dependent on what the dealer says after I get the mb full insp done on it before I buy ( they want 120$ to do a full insp, does this sound good?) also I forgot.

timing belts what is the recommend change miles on it for this car, or is it not a belt ?

thanks
Bob

No timing belt, it has a chain. I would say more like 11k then 12k. Being an aircraft mechanic to, I would say the cars are not that hard to work on when you figure out the tricks. Tools are mostly torx bits, sockets (sears) and screw driver set. I would recommend to anyone the hose clamp tool that they carry at Sears to. It compresses these new style clamps, once you get those you will like the new clamps more then the old screw style. And for interior work get the plastic tool set for removing panels and plastic parts. Performance or other auto parts stores carry a complete set cheap. Then for more extensive work I have all the Mercedes pin removal tools and extensive pin box of extras for electricle work.

Bob;

I would get the inspection done by an independent person. The money is well spent.

Look at the Bushings (fluid filled ones), check the cat, inspect the operation of the heater controls, and the seat controls. Look for bad pixels in the dash display. Tire wear patterns. Ya know...

11K for a 30-40 grand car when it was new.
If it's truely fully loaded, that was a 40 grand car new.

If you're an aircraft mechanic there's nothing here that you couldn't handle.
You'll be able to find just about everything info-wise, you need to maintain it here. I'm just a self taught amateur and I've been able to do a lot on my own.
It's still just a car...but you'll want to fix a few things like the wishy washy suspension. I think at that point, it becomes so much more.

Then there's an ASP pulley, wheels, brakes, exhaust, and some good tires.....

Then it becomes just a joy....

Hey - I think this may be my first post/reply even though I've been viewing for a while...

I just purchased the same car with 71K on it.... here's what I had the dealer fix when I bought the car:

- New bushings on suspension
- New display screen on speedo (It was very faded when the car was hot)
- New breaks
- Reseal molding where roof meets front of sunroof in front
- Replaced driver visor (light didn't work on mirror)

Since then, I've had:

- The infamous sunroof problems (slow opening, sometimes it doesn't open/close)
- I've had to take apart the cd changer twice to remove jammed cartridges

Other than that, it's been an awesome car... decently fast if you shift yourself and bring up the RPM's. I'd go for an extended warranty if you have the option.
