Its oil from the K&N's you have in there. They are most likely over oiled. Give your MAF a good cleaning w/ some sensor cleaner while you're at it.

Edit: How did you remove that elbow between the MAF and the throttle body?

oh yeah the MAF looked good and got a good cleaning and K&Ns are now OUT (I think this is the problem)

That elbow shouldn't be hard to get out? I just turned/pulled it, came out with ease

edit: could it also possibly be the PCV system? Maybe this car lacks the PCV Catch can?

Also how would I go about cleaning this mess? Some sort of spray?

Im pretty sure the oily residue is from the K&N filters. I dont think there is a complete need to get rid of them. Just that they came out of the box over oiled. Clean them off and DONT over oil them, and you should be fine.

Edit: there is MAF cleaner...

It works much like brake cleaner in that it dries quickly, but you can use it to break up the residue a little bit then wipe it all down. The rest will evaporate. You can find it at shucks...

I have SOOOOO been here. Your gunk looks to me like stuff that is getting blown in from the secondary air injection. Perhaps your valve is staying open?
I don't know much about the V6, so I could be 100% wrong here.

To eliminate the concept of the K&N, take that out, and take a pic of the UNDERSIDE. Of course the topside that faces atmosphere is going to have gunk, but what does the underside look like. I bet the underside of that K&N is pristine. But I can help you eliminate that.

Hey, you want a catch can, I'll sell you a $150 dollar Cusco can for half price. I installed a catch can and ran it for 6 months. NEVER got a drop of oil.

it's most likely not from the k&n's, although they could have contributed some (i don't know how you oiled them). just about any car with any kind of mileage is going to have that same stuff in the TB- k&n's or not. it's a mix of carbon as well as the crap from the secondary injection as mentioned below.

take the TB or carb off of any engine- it will look close to the same, depending on mileage.

Can you use alcohol or brake cleaner instead of that? We don't have this herre.

2005 C Wagon (No snickering please!)
My car has 65,000 miles and the intake is dinner plate clean beyond the filters. I did look at a C320 car for sale with K&N filters and saw that the outside edge of the filter did not seal properly and was allowing unfiltered air to enter the intake, and it looked like the pictures. Clean the MAF only with MAF cleaner, and use air intake cleaner on the rest of the system. Get a set of Mann filters. They designed the intake air cleaner and the filter to keep the intake clean. Unfiltered air can cause contaminates in the crankcase that will deplete the ability of your oil to lubricate the engine.

In Europe CRC MAF cleaner is called Air Sensor Cleaner. Call Steve Kwist in Barcelona, he can tell you where to buy it.
