Thanks, Blake. That makes sense, and is easy enough to do.

No problem. I'm almost positive that anyone who orders from formymercedes gets the fully assembled grille though.

Same identical grill as FMM, but different source. Star, star holder and grill came as 3 separate components.

Formymercedes CL style grille fitment question

Does anyone know if the grille can be adjusted to fit further back (towards the engine) into the opening in the hood? I'm thinking like 1/4" back at the bottom and 1/2" back at the top.

No, that is not possible without modifying the grille. The mounting points are already set for exact fitment.

Okay... so can the grille be modified to sit further back into the opening in the hood?

I guess ANYTHING is possible, but I don't imagine it would be easy.

I haven't seen the back of the grille. Are the mounting points on the grille on the same plane as the the entire rear edge of the grille or do they protrude out? I'm just curious if they can be marked and ground down or cut off by 1/4" to 1/2". Does the metal lip along the grille opening in the hood, which I imagine supports the grill from the back, run the entire perimeter of the opening? Sorry for all the questions.

The mounting points are exactly the same as your OEM grille, so if you think you could adjust the fitment of your stock grille to fit this way, then you could do it with the formymercedes grille too. If you're that picky, you might just be better off going custom.

Blake, I haven't received my car yet, so I can't check the OEM grille. I'm not really as picky as it may seem. BUT, from all the pics I've seen of the formymercedes CL style grille, I CAN'T STAND the way the uppermost "slat" of the grille (above the star) looks as if has been flipped into a vertical position. I don't know why they didn't angle it back more. It just doesn't look normal . If I could adjust the grille to angle back a little more at the top, I think I could reduce that strange looking uppermost grille slat. Just my POV

The reason it's done that way is because there are 4 mounting points on top of the grille that can only be secured by having the top slat vertical. The Expression grille does not have a vertical slat on top, but does not mount as easily either and costs more than twice as much. Unless you are right up close, you don't notice the top slat since it's black, but I guess it comes down to personal preference.

I wish there was a black "satin" finish version of this grille (w/ chrome stips along the front of the slats). That glossy uppermost vertical slat just looks goof to me. I had the "prestige sports grille" on my old silver C240. That grille is just an OEM grille with the center cut out and star mount glued in place. The chrome surround/frame on that grille looks fine on a silver car, but doesn't look so good on black
I guess you can't have everything

I'm sure that could be done at a decent bodyshop without much difficulty.

Opinions on Formymercedes CL Grille

I've been wanting to order the CL Grille from Formymercedes but I can't decide which one would be better. Since I have a Brilliant Silver C230SS, I could go both ways.

I would like to hear your opinions, should I go with the black for the more elegant look or the brilliant silver for a more bold and aggressive look?

My vote goes for black. First, it looks more OEM...like it was meant to be there. Second, the silver grilles also have silver vertical slats that should be painted black (IMO). Even though it seems nice to have it color matched to your car, I think the contrast of black really makes it look better. But your best bet is to take a look at some of the ones posted and decide on what suits your taste. Good luck!

Thanks for your guys' opinions. If I were to get the silver, and I should have mentioned this, I would put black door moldings to cover the vertical slats. Also, I guess I like the silver because the SL500 has somewhat of the color matched grille.

However, the black is simple and truly does look OEM. Given what I told you above what do you guys think?

I'm open to more opinions too. Thanks.

I think that would look pretty good. Maybe someone can photoshop one to get a preview of how it would look.

well here are a couple of pics photoshoped. I don't know if it does the pics justice, I'm sure I would probably have to see it in person. One is Brilliant silver but you can't see the grille that great, the other is pewter it looks, so I don't know if it would be a good example. I like the black but I'm kind of trying to imitate the sl500 below.

Maybe it is too silver? Looks like the horizontal slats are angled too much where you can see the silver alot, whereas on the SL500 they are almost parallel to the ground.

You would also have to black out the thick vertical slats at the far left and right, otherwise the grille has the "framed" look of the OEM one and cheap ebay grilles.

Enri, the main complaint I've heard about the original MHDezent grille is that the mounting points are wrong and it has to be rigged to work, which makes fitment a bit unsturdy. Haven't seen it in person though.

ah ha...!!! I'm glad you pointed that out. I really didn't notice that the silver still had that "FRAMED" look. You are right, I think I am sold for the black. Thanks for the help.

I guess now my question is, do you think the 6.5" grille looks too big for the car???

You are right about that Blake. It is a bit unsturdy unfortunately, but it never fell off my car
