2000 BMW Z3 2.3 Roadster (hardtop current ly attached)
the MB is DEFINITELY a better car, more space, better ride, and probably faster. the MB is also better looking, and more comfortable (I've driven both) -- this all coming from a guy who own's a Z3...

the c240 is a much better car except for the all-wheel drive. if you have to have that, then its ok (except i'd rather get the bmw).
there is a pretty good lease for a jag xtype though - i think like $399/month.

2002 Mercedes-Benz C230 Kompressor Sports Coupe
The exhaust just fell off during an aceleration test?!? Reminds me of the first Yugo reviews (were Car & Driver I think had a bumper fall off).

C320
I haven't driven the X-type, but I did check one out at an auto show recently. IMHO it was nice, but some of the interior switches looked like they came straight from the Taurus parts bin.

i actually test drove the x-type at the local jag dealership, they wouldnt let me take it out on the road, but they have a test track (reedmans autoworld) and can safely say it is junk.
it rattled, and had an annoying consistent loud wind noise when cruising anywhere north of 40 mph. its good from far, but far from good
to be honest with you, i would rather have the hyundai xg300 then the x-type. its more solidly built, and i could pocket the spare 20grand
or a c230 coupe.... hahahaha

I haven't driven the 2.5 but I did drive a 3.0 for a few hundred miles to Las Vegas and got it up to 115 mph. It's a bit on the noisy side, not as quick as a C320 by any stretch of the imagination (even though they claim more HP), the seats were comfortable, the fit and finish seemed comparable, rear seats are a little bit more roomier. Reliability should be great compared to MB as Jag is #3 in JD Powers long term dependability compared with MB at #10. I had my 2002 MB in 4 times for repairs and my buddies Jag has been in once for an oil change where they found a code and repaired. It does not seem as sure footed at 100+ speeds as the MB. The MB seems to handle a little better. Neither car had the Sport option. Personally I would get the C320 hands down but I can see why someone would like the character and style of the Jag. To me it does not detract that Jag is owned by Ford or the MB/Chrysler thing. I think that the parts they scrounged from the Ford parts bin work well in the baby Jag despite the negative critisism. Ford has done a lot to turn around the negative dependabilty issue. Audi was able to turn theirs around. I think MB is still in a slump when it comes to dependability.
