Help removing headliner and sunroof

My daughters c230k (out of warranty) has a broken panoramic roof. Won't open or close, makes a clunk'clunk'clunk noise and dealer est $1300 to repair. When she comes home for the summer I thought I would take it apart and do the repair myself. In the past, MB World has been a great resource for stuff like this. I have used it on the various benz' to r/r a head unit, fix a light in a dash pod, remove the center console and fix the shifter,,,,, little things. German cars tend to be pretty straight forward and the trick is knowing when to pull hard (smile) on a part vs look for the screw. Sequence is everything. I have looked over the forum and can't find a good set of directions (with pics). I'll be happy to take the pics on my project if somebody that has done this before can get me started. Please no replies on sync'ing, lubricating or whatever. Just looking for a person tha thas done this before...not 'something' like it...but like it. Tks

I've done it before, the headliner is fairly easy to remove, I could probably do it in an hour now. Its the B-pillars that are the hardest to remove without breaking them, since you have to pull quite hard to get them loose.

The clunk is probably the runners. If you want to confirm this manually before you start anything, try this:

- remember the funky allen key included in the owners manual? get it!
- remove the overheard light/sunroof control cluster (pop off the light cover and you'll see 2 tabs, pull on them and pull down, I think its that simple)
- look underneath and you'll see 2 spots to put the allen key, 2 circular metal objects with a allen key spot in the middle. One is for the sunshade, one is for the roof.
- crank them to open/close the roof or sunshade manually. This will confirm whether the problem is mechanical or electrical.

Most likely its the runners, and something has gotten stuck inside them. Cranking the roof open manually will allow you to inspect them. I found a large rock in mine that was preventing it from closing, could be that simple.

Funny but I was just reading on this before I saw this post.
Normal maint of the car calls for maintaining the sunroof, but
likely most people, once out of warranty mail fail to do this.

I would strongly suggest investing in the W203 service DVD as it has much info related to this. 1800formercedes I think the # is.
It's about 70 bucks with shipping.

Here's one little part related to the maint. part.
I'm pricing the lubricants they specify online, and dang, the grease is $30, and thats the good price!
But if it means I drive my car troublefree with no trips to the dealer for broken sunroof issues, well worth it!
I think what happens is it gets stuck to the rubber and ends up breaking stuff.

Oh wow, I have this Maint guide too....looks like just what you need!
Troubleshooting instructions and block diagrams etc.
It's too large to post here.
PM me with your email address.

Thanks

Thanks to all for your help/support. I have started to take it apart this weekend. Removed the A pillars, loosened B Pillars and took out anything in the back that looked like it held up the headliner. I have not figured out how to remove the rear view mirror and it seems like the headliner is fastened to the roof around the glass opening. If it is like my other experiences with MBZ I suspect it will be straight forward once I figure it out ie:like the mirror slides out. I also was able to crank the sunroof open and closed but it was difficult. I suspect I have an obstruction someplace. It also appears to me that the glass might be at an angle as it goes back...I'll do more investigating. I'll post pictures so other might benefit.

I posted pictures of the entire removal when MBbodyTech installed IMS on my Coupe. It's not difficult at all, just know where to pull and recommend using that little plastic MB wedge tool so as to not eat up your finger tips.

Look for my thread/posts on IMS Installation. If pictures do not show up, try logging on to both www.mbworld.org and www.forums.mbworld.org

hmmm... using keyword: IMS and using user name: Saprissa,
the advanced search feature came up with this:
https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...ght=ims&page=9

Scroll down to post # 362 and # 363.
again, if the pictures don't show up, you need to log on to both MBWorld servers.

I lost the directs and can't get the link again

Guys, need some help. I have to jump back into the pano roof again. Glass won't roll back and the blind is broken in the back. I'm just going to replace the motors and whatever has the blind goofed up but can't find the directions anymore. Looks like they were in this post and I had them at one time. If anybody has a new link, it would be appreciated.

I figured it out. Just a mass a parts.

I now need to find the right and left clips (I have also heard them called clutches) that attach the roller blind to the rail.

The right one broke and the part number on the part doesn't do anything. Lots of posts about needing them and somebody said they are no longer available. I'll call AZautohauz in the AM and see what they know...I called buymbparts.com but they said they no longer deal with part like this (not enough margin).

I might have found the clips.

This site shows what I think is the part but doesn't provide a part #:

#7 in the diagram

http://www.partswebsite.com/benzpart...&image=5776450

This site shows the part but its for an E350. Makes sense that they would share the same part but the cars are so different in age and style I'm concerned.

#320 in the diagram

http://www.mbpartsworld.com/showAsse...=0&modelYear=0

Any thoughts?

I will be doing this repair to the roller blind soon. Does anyone have an estimate to have this fixed at a dealership or private shop?

I actually have the Starmark Service Manual DVD, but it doesn't work in my 64 bit PC...

I've owned the car since 2003 and I just want to fix this before selling because I think it will significantly affect the resale value.

Thanks

If memory serves, to do the rollerblinds should cost around $1200 at a dealer.

Much cheaper at an indy, but they do have to lube everything, and removal/reinstallation of everything is not cheap in and of itself.

Donm1000, I did the job myself for the same reason...I had it up for sale, I was showing how the roof worked and SNAP, the rear blind bracket broke. Like you, I hate to sell it with that part not working.

I have heard about $1400 to fix the motor if your roof is broken. While the motor is more expensive than the part I replaced (2038950105) the labor for fixing the blind seems like it would be more (you practically have to take out the rail assembly).

I also want to report that I replaced the right and left brackets that attach to the glass and slide back on the rails between the felt gap on the roof (PN 2037800158 and 2037800258). I did this because one looked cracked on the end and the swelling of that part could have been causing to much resistance.

I tested all by hand using the crank and it all works. Next step is to put the overhead pod back up temporarily and test.

Hi Jroach, how hard was it to replace the bracket for the blind? I know that I will need to remove the headliner. Any tips on what to do next?

Thanks

At one time I was working up a set of directions on what to do but it seemed so overwhelming I stopped. There is much to be found on these forums and others but the basics are (my comments in parenthesis)

(credit Taylor192 from benzworld)

I don't feel like I need to say this but you do this at your own risk.

original link: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w203...val-coupe.html

- pull A pillars off (A pillars don't come off easy, I'll try and take a pic of the back so you can see how they are held on)
- unscrew visors
- pop out vanity lights
- remove lense on overhead light behind mirror
- pull tabs to release front overhead light fixture (look for pics of this...straight forward once you know where the tabs are)
- pop cover off rear-view mirror base
- remove rear-view mirror (mine snaps into place and it feels like you are going to break something to take it off...again, search for how to remove the mirror for a pic that shows how its held in place)
- remove SRS badges
- remove grab handles, pull out 2 tabs inside, then pull handle to remove (careful pulling out tabs...if you try to pry them out with a screwdriver you will break the tab)
- pop out rear overhead light
- remove hatch cargo cover
- remove hatch cargo cover shelf on either side, remove rubber near rear of shelf to expose a screw, look under shelf for other screws, pull to remove
- loosen rear seat belts, find bolt on lower part of seat belt under the seat bottoms
- remove C-pillars, there's clips under the weather stripping, remove back to front (I left the seat belt attached and the C-pillars in the back without removing them all the way)
- loosen front seat belts from B-pillars, pop off cover on belt holder, remove screw (remove screw first that holds the belt on and you also need to remove the adjustment grab .... I'll try and get a pic of this as well because if you don't do it right you will break this part)
- remove B-pillar, remove clips from under weather stripping, pull HARD towards back of car
- headliner should be free now except for a few wires and clips (I never took the headliner out, merely dropped it down and moved it around based on where I was working. I would prefer to take it out but was afraid to bend it too much.)

Taylors directions stop there but from this point you are close.

Once you get the headliner out or semi-out of the way then you will need to undo the screws that hold the rails in place. The rails are tow long rectangular parts, one for the left, and one for the right.

My back blind was broken so I left a few screws in the front of the rails and just removed the back ones until it dropped down enough to get the broken part out. If it broke like mine then part of the clutch/bracket is on the floor in your car and the other is still in the rail. I would replace both right/left brackets....there just a few bucks each.

If you are in the LA area, let me know...you can come by and see it apart if you catch me before the weekend.

Hey, I would stop by, but I am in SC (not southern California). If you could snap a shot of the rails it would be great.

I really appreciate you posting the headliner instructions as well.

I've taken apart the dash and steering column to fix the tilt steering dog-bone linkage. That looked scary, but wasn't too bad step by step. I will probably take a crack at this in the next weekend or two.

Need to get the C230 ready to sell so I can get a 2000+ M Roadster!

donm1000,

I always forget how to add a pics...or maybe this forum doesn't allows pics. Either way, send me a PM and I'll shoot you over the three pics.

The trick for me was not to remove too many screws such that it would allow the front and back blinds to fall out. I was repairing the back blind so I removed all but three of the screws in the front. I did remove the rear blind all the way...spring loaded to keep the blind taught and has a rectangular pin on the drivers side to lock it in place. The pin on the drivers side is also spring loaded so to remove the blind you push it towards the drivers side to release the round side on the passengers side. It will make sense once you get it apart. Having the blind out will allow you to put the new part(s) onto the blind then feed the part through the rail. My blind was open all the way...might be a hassle if it were closed.

The screws are all pretty obvious but there is one that is slightly hidden in the center support area for the blinds. It's in the group of pics that I'll send. Also snapped a pic of where the clutch/slide is removed from the rail. Photo is not very good but I was trying to give you an idea of where it was located and how far it needs to drop in order to slide out the end.

Putting the new slides/clutch back on: I put new parts on the blind that had been removed then fed them into the rail, right then left but don't pull them by the blind until both are in the rail and slide freely. If you get the left or right too far in-front of the other you run the risk of breaking the new part. It will make sense when you get to this point.
