Crappy morning today. Temperature dropped a bunch today and it is snowing. My rear tires at BALD, so that was a fun drive. Then CEL came on again Same P0012 code, so the sensor swap proves the sensor is good, so it is something else. Next I am going to replace the magnet. It is part# A2720510177. List price is: $19.50.

Damn, I would really love to get a hold of the DTB. Called the dealer, and they wouldn't provide it to me. I am thinking of spending the $18 for 24 hour access to STARTEK online and downloading as much info as possible.

Damn - CEL again - good luck tracking down this gremlin. Hope it is not one of those "use once" impulse wheels. I notice that another poster says that the dealer reset the inlet cam on bank 1 - I wish I knew what they meant by "resetting" the inlet cam. Any change in driveability?
I see that the adjuster has a very wide range of 40° advance for intake cam (from 4° BTDC to up to 36° ATDC) - I also see that the network uses data from the MAF, temp sensor & CPS. The fact that the other bank shows no problem would lead one to believe that all of them are OK.

The magnet and the camshaft control solenoid have been revved (Magnet once and solenoid twice.) I am thinking just to replace them both. Magnet is $15 and solenoid is $50. Just getting tired of screwing around with this
If that doesn't do it, I am going to have to breakdown and buy one of those cheap chinese multiplexors and have Karo give me the hookup with STAR diagnostics and find some reset. Though I still doubt that accomplishes anything.
I have been in a conversation with Jerryml430 via PM (He is having similar issue, different code.) They replaced the camshaft solenoid and magnet on his, and he has had no trouble since. He didn't mention anything about resetting anything.

Now that I have STAR, I went to look at the code in STAR DAS, and here is what I got:
Interesting how the second screen says to NOT replace the camshaft position sensor. Also, it says to replace the solenoid, aka magnet. Looks like the part was superseded, so that makes sense. Only $15 for the part, so I just ordered one.

I just got a CEL with the code P0365 which is the camshaft position sensor circuit B. I found the part, assuming it is the one for the exhaust, for $59 and would like to try and replace it myself. Does anyone know how to do this on a m271 (2003 c230k). My car has had the recall work to cam solenoids...but these are different then what is throwing the code, right?
If anyone can provide a DIY including taking off the engine cover, it would be greatly appreciated.

Replaced the magnet/solenoid about 2 weeks ago, reset via STAR, and ran the camshaft position test in STAR. So far no CEL, and surprisingly the car runs better. Guess I didn't realize that the somewhat rough idle and a touch of hesitation every once and a while were from the magnet/solenoid being faulty. Checked the part number on the other 3, and they are the same old part, so may have to change out those with the revised parts at some point. Overall a cheap and easy fix to a minor annoyance.

Just an update 3 months later and no CEL, so I am convinced the problem is fixed.
Just wanted to bump this thread as a new member blanco617 has this code as well as p0022 and p0025, which are all the fault of the camshaft solenoids that have been revised. As I suggested to him in PM, I would replace all 4 of them, as they are known problem parts.
Attached is the EPC diagram of where they are located. It is the red circled part 140: Also attached is a picture of the front of the engine cylinder heads of where the solenoids/magnets are. They are super easy to replace. Just remove the 3 bolts in each one with an E8 external torx socket, unplug the connector and replace with new.
Part can be had here at Parts.com: http://www.parts.com/oemcatalog/inde...ber=2720510177 for $14.95 ea. Part number is attached to link.
Let me know if you need anymore help. Reading this thread in it's entirety should answer all the questions.

I hope you guys can help out on a P0012 code, as a search brought up nothing for an R350, but did for the C-class. I've read the entire thread and it was a wealth of information.
Does the R350 share the same engine as the C-class (M272)? Are the sensors the same, if not, are they in the same location? What about the magnets?
I've located parts for the sensors, but not magnets, since I don't have a part number. Any help there?
Thanks guys,
Jim
EDIT: Sorry for my lack of knowledge, I know more about my car than my wifes.

All M 272's are the same. Use John's link to parts.com & type in Mercedes against that P/N - All the parts will come up.

Thanks. It should be covered under warranty, but if not, it's good to have the info.
The SA is saying it takes 2 to 2 1/2 hours to swap out
the cam sensor and or magnet. Seems a bit high after reading the thread.

They shouldn't be even touching the sensors. In the pics I posted above from my STAR system, it clearly says NOT to replace the sensors, just the magnets. I have replaced both, and if they say 2-2.5 hours to replace, I suggest they need to find more competant techs. Half an hour at the most to replace the magnet AND sensor.

Thanks John.
I need to get back with the SA, but I'm sure he said they swapped out the magnets only. Baker MB is the only MB dealer in Chucktown SC, so our options are limited unless we drive 2 hours to Columbia SC. All the service is done by myself or a local indy. Baker is for warranty only.
They will not warrant a crossover pipe or brace connecting the two cats. Seems lame to me. It has broken and rattles until the car is warmed up. I've not seen it yet, but will when I get the car back Monday, as they are repairing other issues under warranty.

Thank you for an excellent post....your pics and pdfs were very helpful and made the job so much easier. I just changed the two passenger side magnets on my 2006 c230. All clear on my check engine light and now its time for a test ride!
$19.80 each at MB of Freehold, NJ (used 10% off coupon on dealer's website)

John this thread has been most useful. Handed it all to a friend the other day & his car is now fine with new magnets.

John, Did you replace all magnets? I get the P0015 (Right) but I don't know which one it is. I'm going to order it through RMEuro and wondering should I change both or 1?
Thanks
Thanks

P0015 is Bank 1 Position "B". If you look back earlier in this thread Glyn posted the info to find the correct one. Bank 1 is passenger side of engine, and position "b" is the exhaust cam. So replace the magnet on the exhaust cam on the passenger's side of the engine.
