Extended Waranty????

Okay. I just bought my first MB. 2005 C230 with 23,000 miles on it. I absolutely love the car.

I believe it has some factory warranty left on it. My credit union offers an extended warranty. I have never bought an extended warranty on anything. I always felt they were a rip off. But with this car being a mercedes, I know even small repairs can be outrageous. I am real nervous about the maint. on this car. Heard some people they have never had problems and some people say they are maint. hogs...and I know nothing about working on a car.

Just wondering what your thoughts or experiences are? Is it worth the extra expense?

Warranty: 60 months or 100k miles. = $1800 for the Platinum Plan (includes roadside assist, rental car, tire protection, trip protection)

Covers everything except: Audio speakers, batteries, boby panels, bumpers, cables, carpeting, convertible tops, exhaust and emission systems components, mirrors, manual clutch components, paint, passenger restraint system, seats, soft trim/moldings or appearance items, suspension springs, telephones, torsion bars, upholstery, weather stripping, and wheel lug nuts or wheel covers.

I was surprised by that answer. The list of things covered was really extensive.

Search this forum, there are a lot of posts on extended warranties. I have a 2005 C230, the M271 engine has had its share of problems, check cylinder heads/valves and make sure you get the PLV hose replaced.

Anyway , why pay for future repairs you may never need? The whole extended warranty business is a scam.

Extended warranties rarely pay for themselves (even with a Mercedes)....check out consumerreports.org

You might want to look into the Mercedes extended warranty, if it's an option for you. I got the 24 month/100K mileage option, and a lot of what you listed as "not-covered" is covered for me: Audio speakers, batteries, cables, exhaust and emission systems components, mirrors, passenger restraint system, seats, soft trim/moldings or appearance items, suspension springs, telephones, upholstery, weather stripping.

I generally never buy extended warranties, I feel if they are offering it to you it is to their advantage. The only reason I could give to buy one is if it lets you sleep at night. The money you pay can go a long way towards repairs. Since you bought the car used it probably has all the bugs worked out. It took me about two years to get the bugs worked out of my car.

A transmission only warranty can cover you for about 500,000 miles for under $1,000. They pay for nothing else though. If your radio dies on you, you gotta pay up.

Careful, some extended warranty companies require you to take your car somewhere to do teh oil change. You need a receipt, so if you do it on your own, you're out of luck.

I have an 03 c240 bought used in 2005 & it seem the "bugs" never left. Ever since it stalled on me twice during rush hour due to the crank sensor; every little thing I hear or feel different it scares me to death now..although it never stalled since the sensor was replaced.
I know some of it(if not all) I was imagining...
Just don't like to feel that way about a car, especially a 'supposedly' reliable one.
Right now I have a door lock actuator problem I need done.
Get my alternator & batteries checked due to "undervoltage" warning a few weeks ago.
What else is next? water pump? A/C?...don't know.
Thinking of trading it in but could not decide yet...This is my first BEnz & I usually pay my cars off before trading it...don't know...don't know.
I had a BMW 325is previously & the only problem I had was the water pump that I warned about replacing before it breaks.
& money is tight right now for purchasing a warranty.

I bought my '05 C230 as a CPO vehicle, so it included the extra 1 yr/100k extended warranty. Warranties are always a gamble - you may pay for it and never use it or it may pay for itself many times over. Knowing the lofty prices MB charges for labor, it may not take much going wrong to cover the cost of the warranty.

On a side note, I have a rant about the MB extended warranty. The interior door pull on the front passenger side pulled away from the door at the top. This is considered a trim piece, and therefore not covered by the extended warranty. The part costs $40; dealer wants $220 (including part) to fix. My SA indicated this problem is not uncommon due to a poorly designed, cheap part. Ouch.

I guess I better be gentle on my door pull.

My '05 is a CPO as well and it's a good thing for me that it is.

At 60,000 miles I had to have the head replaced due to the carbon build up issue. My alternator was recently replaced along with the radio, door lock actuator and leaking cam sensors.

The first 50,000 miles I was pretty much problem free. Now I'm starting to have issues. I don't know about after market warranties but if they cover major components it's probably a good idea. If I remember correctly, I paid an extra 1,000 - 1,200 for my additional yr/50,000 miles.

I had an extended warranty on a '99 Altima that I bought with 20,000 miles. It paid for itself. We loved the car, but over the course of ownership we had close to $8000 worth of repairs...all coved by the warranty. That was enough for me to always buy a warranty from now on. You always hope you never have to use it, but when you do, it pays for itself.

I'd say an extended warranty is essential.
BUT that being said, one that doesn't cover some of things I highlighted...
like "cables". Does that mean, any electrical failure due to bad wiring isn't covered? What exactly is a "cable"? If it's referring to like a brake cable, then no biggie. The only cable in the whole car is for the E brake.

Exhaust and emission components? Here in Cai, we're covered for 80K miles no matter what...not a likely source of problems, though I recently replaced the manifold gasket myself. (but I have a header, self installed and didn't use a genuine gasket when installing...did this time!)
Seats- Electric seat components can be troublesome and expensive.
I'd want coverage for that, or better yet, just not have them, too much hassle if it breaks.
Torsion bars? Like that would break.....

I'd look for a warranty that covers the seats and the entire restraint system for ALL occupants. Other than that looks good!

I bought an extended warranty from Mercury Extended Auto Warranty, part of Mercury Auto Insurance. I bought the platinum plan for my used 2001 in 2004, 5 yr or 100000 miles. Will be up in Oct 2009 or 100k ( I have 78k on my car) and $0 deductible. Paid $1600 at the time.

BEST INVESTIMENT EVER FOR MY CAR. I think they have paid aprox. 4-5k in repairs to my car!
