Anybody Seen This Coupe?

Okay, this may be old news. Apparently this is a pic from a 2004 car show.
Old news perhaps, but new to me. If everyone has seen it, slap me and close the thread.

Anyway... What were they thinking?

If it belongs to one of you..., Love the car man......

And here I thought it was a snow plow. Makes me want a custom bric-a-brack shelf now so I can be a cool kid.

Awesome paint job, looks nice. But it needs to lose the Whale Tail on the back and them Bra straps or whatever that is on the front.

I think it was Fletcher Jone that ended up selling that car for MBUSA.

Yeah. It seemed from the other pics it was part of the MB official exhibit.

Note: On the conceptcarz.com link, they've spec'd the car as AWD(?!) Typo, or the world's only 4matic coupe?

I can't believe no one mentioned the terrible offsets on both of those cars. The paint job on the brown car is very 50's custom rodder looking. I think the wheels on it were a poor choice and it could have looked so much better with not only better matching wheels, but better fitting wheels as well. The flat black on the grill should have been painted to match as well...the flatness of it throws off the flow. The wing might actually flow better if the wheels shared the same aggression.

The offset of the car? How can you tell the offset of the car is bad? It looks tucked in to me.

Wheels look sick on both cars, just that the first car was just horrible lookin.

it's kinda weird how there are definitely 2 different types of C-Coupe owners over the years...
those with tasteful mainstream mods, yet original in variety and aggressiveness.
And then there are those that are just simply gawdy.

There are quite a few threads dating around 2002-2003 with pictures of some of these "show" C-Coupes. One was used by Mercedes-Benz to promote the old C-Spot Coupon promotion. As mentioned above, Fletcher Jones actually thought that Coupe was "cool". Anyways, everyone has their own taste and preferences... It's just that for some reason, the C-Coupe is one of those kind of cars that people really don't know what to make of it.

You obviously have no concept of wheel fitment or an understanding of wheel offset. It has nothing to do with the car. The wheel mounting surface "is where it is" and isn't easily changed..but that isn't the offset. The fact that both cars have Battleship fitment is what's wrong...it looks horrible and detracts from how good both cars "could" look with a proper stance. A some what easy fix would at least be some spacers to bring out the wheels more...ie: lowering the offset. It's like this..

Say you have an 18x9 +32 and you add a 20mm spacer. You now effectively have "made" the wheels have a +12 offset. Negative offset pushes the wheels out further, positive brings the mounting point more in towards the body of the car. It's very simple. Their wheels are extremely un-aggressive and make the cars appear wimpy, it's like adding a widebody and then not changing wheels or adding spacers..it's just whack!

What I find funny is the unimaginative Mercedes owners who want to be part of a custom community..but drive stock or near stock cars..and have no further plans with them, yet they find them "hot" somehow?

Now I am a for each his own kind of guy..but I do believe that I have generally "good taste" as the majority of the cars I've built have been well accepted by most types of enthusiasts. Would I do what these guys have? No..first off I wouldn't have bought a coupe..to me the dimensions of the thing are all wrong looking, but still nice cars (just not for me). Had that first car been mine to dabble with, I would have done something a little like this (if not touching the paint job was in order). Yes, more aggressive fitment (lower offset and a touch of camber), painted the grill area deep gloss black to match the rest, changed out the mirror winkers with the newer type and bringing it down closer to the ground:

I think you can sum it up more than that.

There's only one type of MB owner, the one who thinks only OEM or OEM-like subtle mods add to the "VIP" styling of a Mercedes, that anything sporty is rice and ruins the apparent "luxury" of the brand.

The other owner you describe is so few and far between. They should've bought a BMW with a larger aftermarket of custom parts that don't look OEM

This is why there's so little aftermarket for Mercedes.

Thank god for the SL owners with enough money not to care about what the typical MB owner thinks of over-the-top mods, there's some fantastic "riced-out" SLs.
