Castrol 0w-30 and Mobil1 0w-40 is a rare find in my country! Had to settle down and try out the Shell Helix Ultra 5w-30 instead... arghhhh... So far so good though... But the Indie offered me a 5-50 instead... but I politely declined...

All Mobil 1 5W-40's are not the same. Some fail HTHS (High Temperature High Shear). Only use products approved against page 229.5 - NOT 229.51 !!!!

Forgive me, I'm still learning the ropes of the way MB denotes all the various components of their vehicles- I've stopped referring to the car as a C230 and begun calling it a W202 with a 722.6!
Anyhow, maybe you could help me understand where that car falls- MY2000 C230K/W202. On pages one and six of the pdf from post #1, it would seem my vehicle falls into the 229.3 category... as they mention 1998+ engines, and mine is MY2000. Am I understanding the classification of my car (as 229.3 compatible) correctly?
BTW, thanks for all of your posts on this site regarding service fluids, I'm learning alot. I'm an MB noob.

Anyhow, maybe you could help me understand where that car falls- MY2000 C230K/W202. On pages one and six of the pdf from post #1, it would seem my vehicle falls into the 229.3 category... as they mention 1998+ engines, and mine is MY2000. Am I understanding the classification of my car (as 229.3 compatible) correctly?

With the 722.6 transmission MB have mandated use of the new 236.14 fluid.
The Merc approval page system does not always mean the higher the .XX number the better the product. It sometimes denotes products for a different application. e.g. 229.51 is for passenger car diesel with Cat & particulate filters & higher designations in gear oil are for Commercial Vehicles.

Daimler has sent out a message to the industry that they no longer accept that both MB 229.5 and MB 229.51 are claimed on the same formulation.
MB 229.5 sulfated ash has to be within 0.8 and 1.5
MB 229.51 sulfated ash has to be max of 0.8
These specifications are now in direct conflict with one another. What this means is:
One product for MB passenger car Gasoline.
Another product of different formulation for passenger car Diesel.
Don't let anyone tell you that their product meets both specs as we have warned before. It is now official.

I'm not sure if it's a new MB USA policy. I talked to him about a year ago, and then they were using the "gas engine" M1 oil in the big tanks, and sold ESP by the quart.

Mobil M1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 is not approved for any Benz gasoline engine. US dealers & MBUSA quite often do their own thing. Cost them with the 722.9 filled for life recommendation. Their change once at 39K miles is also flawed. Change every 39K is correct.

I thought you had mentioned that MB used the difference in ash % left after cooking, to somewhat arbitrarily work into creating separate specs for diesel and gas engine oils.
BTW, the handy MB "World" Fluids listings that included current 229.5 and 229.51 approved oils is no longer accessable. Coinsidence

Sulphated Ash level is a sensible measure for achieving what Benz wants.

I was going thru this thread and I noticed at my last oil change they were changing my oil with Mobil Formula M 5W 40 at Morristown MB. I bought the car at Benzel Busch and they were changing oil with the same 5w40. Just like the previous poster. WTF
I am going to the Mobil 0w40 from now on!!

I don't know where you guys came up with mixing different weights of oil...but you should never ever do that. EVER! Stick with a brand and weight and stay with it. It will pay off for the life of your vehicle.

I am going to the Mobil 0w40 from now on!! The ESP version has a green label, is clearly marked as "low ash content" and complies with 229.31/229.51 specs ... they use this exclusively on diesel engines.
The non-ESP version has a grey label, is marked for compliance with 229.3/229.5 specs ... it appears to be a special "model" of the oil tweaked for Mercedes, and I can only find it for sale at the dealership.
The dealership also said that Mobil 1 0w-40 European Car Formula, which you can find at the auto stores, is also perfectly fine to use. It is on the 229.5 spec. But as was mentioned earlier in this thread, in recent years MB has moved from 0w-40 to 5w-40 as their recommended weight, no doubt for just reasons. Considering the dealership price is surprisingly reasonable I am planning to stick with dealership oil for now.

Im sticking with the 0w40 moblie1 reccommended in the manual with my car. I just got a great deal at the local auto parts store here. $5.49 per quart on sale from $8.99. yesterday was the last day of the sale. I lucked out.

Be aware -- Mobil 1 Formula M 5w-40 and Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5w-40 are two different oils! I went to the dealership yesterday and they pulled out both bottles so I could look at them and compare.
The ESP version has a green label, is clearly marked as "low ash content" and complies with 229.31/229.51 specs ... they use this exclusively on diesel engines.
The non-ESP version has a grey label, is marked for compliance with 229.3/229.5 specs ... it appears to be a special "model" of the oil tweaked for Mercedes, and I can only find it for sale at the dealership.

Mobil 1 0W-40 Euro formulation & other 229.5 approved 0W-40's are still MB's preferred global ALL SEASON oils. 5W-40 is more a US thing for dealer inventory & cost.

Seems more like the non-ESP 5w-40 was a special blend only for MB, maybe technically motivated (? I recall reading someone's comments about 0w-40 producing more valve tap noise at startup than 5w), and due to the smaller market opportunity the auto stores don't both carrying it. ... would this make sense?

I think it was mainly cobbled up by Mobil for the US dealer network to give them a little more profit.
I doubt you would hear a difference in cold start tappet noise. At operating temp they are both SAE 40's so there will be no difference there.

i do my oil change every 10000 kms with fleece filter with fully synthetic 5w50 work fine.
and I change sparks plugs every 15000 kms.
if you have 722.9 transmission and still haven`t got any sensor trouble swap atf dexron vi to GULF ATF MZ A.S.A.P, complying to mb 2369.14 regs. Avoid this expensive trouble. applies to any vehicle using this Tranny. If code appears must change electronic module and reflash on dealer only, 3000 Us$ expenses.
