new car smell
I remembered long time ago reading from "Car and Driver" that new car smell is actually the sun protectant that car manufactures put on the plastic dash.
Does anyone know/where to get that solution that'll bring back "new car smell"?

that's might be true for ford, gm, honda, etc. I don't think the new car smell in BMW, MB, Audi, and Jags are the same as the domestic or japanese's plastic smell. European car tends to have leather smell when new. By mean, I think the new car smell is from the leather or vinyl cloth not from some sun protectant for the dash board.

Report this morning - Japanese Scientists say the "new car smell" is as addictive as glue sniffing, with more than 100 different compounds identified, mostly hydrocarbons, with varying degrees of toxicity and a real danger to health.
Apparently it takes three years of degredation to reach safe levels, and often increases to highly dangerous levels in hot summers where the volatile compounds are expended at much greater rates.
Something else to worry about and another pleasure about to be denied us all.....

That smell is toxic?
I love that smell! I've had the "new car" smell in my car for more than half a year now; I rarely drive it since I commute to school. The smell just gets pent up inside, hits me like a wave whenever I open the door
My friends always comment on how my car always smells new.

to young:
I know about the "new car" flaver car freshener. Although I've never used it, it probably doesn't work since the "new card smell" isn't really a perfume-like smell, it more like, well, a unique smell. Additionally, I want something that can be applied onto dash so it'll last more than 2 weeks.
to Mustard:
I doubt that the smell is toxic, or all car manufactures should have already been class action sued by now. If Mustard can show us where is the report that said so maybe we can all take a look.

"New car" smell is the outgassing of the glues and plastics used to build the interior of the car. Why anyone would want to breath that stuff is beyond me. Not toxic huh? Here's a recipe list so you can create your own new car smell fragrance:
Benzene - a known human carcinogen for which an annual exposure goal of 16 micrograms per cubic metre has been recommended in the UK
Acetone - a mucosal irritant
Cyclohexanone - a possible human carcinogen
Ethylbenzene - a systemic toxic agent
MIBK - a systemic toxic agent
n-Hexane - a neurotoxic agent
Styrene - a probable human carcinogen
Toluene - a central nervous system dysfunction agent
Xylene isomers - a foetal development toxic agent
The above is from: http://resourcesnews.tripod.com/dec-4.html

even if you go and put an air freshener into your car, you wont be removing the new car small, just masking it.... So, you cant really avoid the "toxins." I guess you could drive w/ your windows down for a few years to help remove the new car smell.
Everything outside of our bodies (sometimes inside too) will shorten our life spans. Gettin a new car is worth the side affects of the new car smell![Big Grin](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

I know Performance Products has a new car scent spray. I was considering the acquisition of this spray but I felt that it wasn't worth it if it was the only thing I were to buy (since shipping actually cost more than the item itself).
