C 240 Windshield Replacement

I am just opening new thread so reader will get latest 2008 information
I was sloppy during changing of wiper blades and my wiper hand banged on my glass and I had chip called Insurance and they were happy to get it replaced with any one I wish to go. Called MB dealer in Columbus Ohio, he gave me $600 out of door ($300 labor and $300 part)

I asked him if they do glass replacement job in house and he told me NO they get it done from outside.

Now my Question -

1) Should I go to safelite or 2) let my dealer get this done for me so I can have Quality Assurance of my MB Dealer??
3) Is the price quoted sounds reasonable?
4) Is it safe to believe that dealer must have considers rain sensor and any other related options c-240 original windshield carry (he got part from my VIN number)

*** Some questions may irritate few of you but I am newbie here so please excuse

How big is the chip. Can't you have it repaired. Saves a lot of potential problems.

You should have the chip repaired through your insurance and the work should cost you nothing. The insurance company would rather you file a windshield chip claim and pay just a little bit rather than having you file for a whole new windshield. I've had a few chips fixed on my windshield at no cost to my monthly insurance rate and/or out of my pocket.

If the chip is now a crack, then you have to replace it It doesnt hurt to talk to safelite. I have a windshield from safelite right now and the windshield has been great.

OT: Safelite was fixing my chip and cracked the windshield, so they replace the windshield for me because they didn't tell me that it could potentially crack during the chip repair...

the reason I went to replacement because, I heard its rain sesning glass and I have crack where arm rests.

since I had 250 deductible I had to pay $130+ taxes anyway for chip repair, then why not pay few more and get entire glass replaced by MB dealer

There is a sensor at the top portion of the glass where the rear view mirror meats the glass. The entire glass does not sense rain. When Safelite replaced my windshield, there was a new sensor on the glass.

If the glass is cracked, then it should be replaced w/ a the proper sensor already installed on the glass.

Sounds like replacement is inevitable.

In the modern car the windscreen is a stress member of the entire vehicle. The new one has to be competently installed to ensure intergrity of the shell. Make sure they get all the sensors behind the RV Mirror remounted correctly and that the screen has the correct clear pieces in the shadow mask for your car's particular sensor compliment. - Good luck

I have had two windshields (windscreen for our UK friends) replaced. The rain sensor needs to be attached in a factory for it to work properly. Pilkington makes many C class windshields, and their fit and optical clarity is always good. I use Pilkington glass to master DVD's because of their attention to quality.

Most dealers use a glass shop to change their windshields. Consider this, would you like a doctor to draw blood, who does it 3 times a year, or a nurse that does it five times a day? The glass shop will do a good job.

I let the dealer take care of the process because then I have a single point of contact if their is a problem from stress cracks or trouble with the rain sensor. They also clean up nicely and wash the car.

My deductible is zero and comprehensive claims do not increase the cost of my policy. I see no reason not to let the dealer do it.

The invoice from my dealer has always been less than $ 500. Could your dealer be quoting mechanical labor rate instead of the body shop rate? My dealer is $105 for mechanical and $70 for body shop.

just got call from safelite, lady told me that they wi get it done for $381.19+taxex, I asked her if they are replacing OEM, she said NO they make their own glass but it has to PASS same TEST MB Glass is subject to clear. And also there won't be ant MB Logo.

I think I will go with dealer as they being single point of contact and they will provide necessary stuff to glass body workshop to get it done. I am sure these bodyshops must be doing good job as Mercedes reputation is on riding there hands

Appriciated input from fellow members, I am scheduled Glass-Transplant this Wednesday, will update you once done. I have to drop CAR at 10 AM and pick it back around 4, service manager said I will get loaner

Agreed - all screens in South African MBs are Pilkingtons from our local plant & that rain sensor is crucial - variable refraction & all that.

The glass is pre made accurately with the rain sensor imbedded at factory - so all they do is instal & connect. Other sensors have to be remounted.

UPDATE !!

After fixing Windsheild, I found noise of wind while driving on freeway, called back dealer he gave me a number of outsourced glass work company. Called them they send a person to fix the issue, but he is unable to fix the the panel and then had to call MB dealer who asked to bring CAR to there dealership to fix panel back.

Went to dealer they found the glass work man broke few pins so they told me they have to order pins and new glass.

WOW ... I am glad I did it thorugh dealer and not throufh safelite also on side panel I can see black patches looks like outsourced glass work guy did not used gloves !!

will update you on this folks

OK here is update.... dealer stated that bad job was done by there preffered glass work facility. They had to order special clips too for pillar and different glass that fits my vehicle. Finally after 2 days I got CAR back. It cost me ZERO this time but I see invoice and it was running for another 450 USD.

I used Safelite & no problems except that a stone cracked the winshield again 3 months later. I would use them again.
