Got a '03 C230K loaner....
and have been driving it in the past couple of days. My impression of the car is pretty good. The car has only 500 miles on it. The 1.8L engine seems quiter than the 2.3L and the torque seems to come sooner (I test drove a C230K a few months ago). For instant pick up, the throttle response is better than the C320 (which I had as a loaner last week). Of course, you can feel the C320 will have more power after 50mph. Overall, the car has a very solid MB feeling. For that price, I would say it is one of the better cars in the market. If MB can throw in leather & power seats, it will be perfect!!

i'm an engineer and i just got off a project where we designed an HVAC system (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) for a semi cab. i can tell you that when most systems are designed, unless the problem is critical (which most wouldn't be in an HVAC system, it's just for comfort after all), the system will probably just shut down if even a simple sensor fails, leaving you to simply get it fixed to get the system up and running again. if the system relies on all components to be operational to run, and doesn't have any error handling (and it doesn't need them in this case) then it will just shut down and log an error. again, i don't know if this is how it works on the MB (you'd think the MB would be able to handle this), i'm just saying that this is probably what the car is telling the tech at your dealer.
when we designed our system, we did come up with alot of error handling procedures for when sensors failed, but if a sensor failed that was needed to operate the system and the error wasn't a big deal (like an internal cab temp sensor), we would just shut down the system down and log the error. but our system was just a prototype.
man, i rambled on alot there. sorry.

i'm just trying to say that sometimes it's really not the tech's fault if they tell you something that makes no sense to you. sometimes it's just what the car tells them is wrong. then when they dig into it, they can figure out the real problem and how to fix it. of course, i'm making no excuses for techs who really don't know what they're doing.
