EIS replaced
If anyone is interested, I had my car's EIS replaced several weeks ago.
Her symptoms were 5-10 iterations of no-cranking each cold start before
finally cranking. I also noticed the steering wheel buttons were failing to
work until the interior started to warm up (not to be confused with a slow
responding LCD panel) and every once in a while I would get a single cycle
from the wipers for no apparent (to me) reason.
It started out as a single no-crank (sometimes two) which I initially suspected to be a problem of the key (it had developed a crack at the edge
of the lock button). Unfortunately it became progressively worse and worse
(as temperatures stayed well below freezing) to the point the key wouldn't
always authenticate, and the MFD would frequently continue to insist
"REMOVE KEY!" after it had already been removed.
After it was replaced (and I might add my new key looks pretty sweet!)
she hasn't given me one issue... except my ashtray cover had a nice 2.5"
squiggly scratch that was promptly replaced at no cost.
Perhaps this can help others.

Thank you - Averyone I know that has had EIS issues seems to find that the problem is exacerbated by low temperatures - that seems to be confirmed here.

Interesting symptoms. Never woulda guessed the EIS.
Wavey, don't really matter on the pn, it's not user replaceable.
My local guy showed me one...said it was about 500 bucks for the part,
is ordered by VIN, comes with a special code to be entered into the
SD to register it with the ECU. Not a DIY job.

and $12.66 "chemicals and fasteners" - sorry for the full detail, I analyze a
6-digit telecom bill every month. =)
From my invoice, the EIS was 203.545.06.08.
Strangely enough, I was originally quoted nearly $1,400 (key not included).
