1 New Message: Front Left Side Lamp

Oh joy!
Generally.. the messages from your car aren't really what you really want to see =/
and this was something i don't want to see

Long story short, bad day became more of a bad day when I saw this message that something was wrong with my baby....

I guess my bulb burned out?

What would be the quickest fix for this?
If I bring it into the dealer would they fix this under warranty but charge me for labor?

The bottom-line:
I want this message gone. I am un-nerved by this problem with my car..
I don't mind the amber, but I also wouldn't mind getting the markers painted/cleared..

But how would I actually pop them out and paint/coat them?
I always search first... but I didn't see any topics with any specifics.
How would I change the bulb? Where would I buy the bulb?

Thanks guys

Any auto store should carry the bulb. Also to remove it just stick a flat screw driver in there and pop it out. Wrap a cloth around the screw driver so you dont scratch the lens. Only the lens part you have to pop out not the side impact.

Don't take it to the dealer. Pop out the side markers, take the bulb to an auto store, get the new bulb, replace it, then pop side marker back in its spot.

If you are under warranty, take it to the dealer.

A Car
im out of waruantee for a few years now but thankfully my dealership has a lifetime replacement of light bulbs on our cars. i just bring it in, and yes, why not. everything you need to know about changing the bulb is in your owners manual.

I dont think a Bulb is covered under warranty. IS IT???

From what I know like the wiper blades, bulbs stuff like that are not covered.

All you have to do it pop out that side marker. Put a flat screw driver and pop out the side marker not the side impact. Then Take out the old bulb take it to a car store (autozone, kragen, pepboys) and say I need this same bulb. Then buy the bulb put it back into the housing then snap the side marker back in it's place.

Thats all.

I know it might sound hard but trust me it's the easiest car maintenance ever.

Wearing items are not covered, like brake parts, wipers, tires, etc. But a bulb is not a "wearing" item, so yes it is covered by MB. Bulbs are covered by any manufacturer's bumper-to-bumper warranty as far as I know.

Thanks for all the info.
I'm pretty sure 'wear & tear' things like bulbs aren't covered under warranty =/
Even if it is... warranty is no longer provided..

I'd consult the owner's manual, but I put it in the safety deposit box at the bank, so I can't really get it soon.

So, flat head screw driver and 'pop' it out.

So if you're viewing it from the side.
Would I stick the screw driver

1) From the Length side (Front/Back of the sidemarker, facing the Front/Rear of the car)

2) From the Width side ( Top/Bottom of the sidemarker, facing the MoonRoof/SideSkirts of the car)

I took some pics on the procedure.

You need a flat screw driver and a rag (so you dont scratch the side marker)

Step 1

Step 2 (Slowly pry it out, there are plastic clips so be very gentle) (took the rag out so you can see the plastic clips inside, keep the rag on there so you dont scratch it)

Looks like the previous owner broke the side impact on the other side, so hold the side impact with one hand so that doesn't pop out as well.

This is what can happen WE DONT WANT THIS

Hope that help, Again be gentle there are clips on there as you can see in the Step 2. So be careful so you dont brake them.

Good Luck

have you just try taking out the 8mm bolt that holds the lower inner fender and then just pulling back the inner fender and twist the harness out. I remember tried to the do it as the way described above, but i kepted getting the feeling i was going to break the tabs.

I remeber i was able to change by sticking my hand through the inner fender

like this

The wire on the left is the side marker bumper harness.

This way looks much safer. It's harder work but it much safer. I would go with this way. I know what you mean trying to pop it out with a screw driver feels like it's going to break. I saw a thread here couple of weeks ago but I lost it. Some member was showing how he changed his to clear corners and he did it the screw driver way but since he is only changing his bulb your way is a lot safer.

And as for the warranty issue, i had the same error and light out and took it in bc they wanted to keep a record of all issues with the car. No cost and was out in 5 mins for the first time it happened

Replacing Side marker bulb

I think it's the same for all W203's.
Download an owners manual for free from mbusa.com
You have to give your VIN and sign up for a free account to download.
Leave the screwdrivers out of it! You'll just scratch the car.
Just use your hands! Pull back towards the tires, pull the front out.

Wow.
+1

I'll go try it when I have the time to go and get a replacement bulb / some spray paint.
If I'm going to take out my sidemarker... i'm just going to paint and clearcoat it to match my body paint
