So, for a M271 (05 C230K SS) you can use

NGK ~ LFR6AIX-11
or
Bosch ~ FR-6-MPP-332

which one is better overall ?
They're the same......I picked Bosch because it's cheaper!

You can use PLATINUM Ir FUSION+4 Bosch 4501.

do you need a special spark plug socket to remove/install the spark plugs or any regular spark plug socket will work? i also read that you need to use a 17mm open wrench to pull the spark plug wires... thanks in advance

Check your service manual. It says 78000 miles for an '05 c230.

I used a 3/4" spark plug socket and they fit very well. They were not loose at all. 3/4" is equivalent to 19.05 mm. So it is probably a 19 mm socket, but the 3/4" should work fine since 0.05 mm is a very small amount to be over sized.

fyi guys.. make sure you get a ratchet extention (about 7 inch).. the spark plug is pretty deep in the engine.. you will also need a torx socket to remove the coil.. other than that it's pretty easy.. only took me like 1/2 an hour to do the whole job plus 2 trip to the auto parts store to buy the right tools (torx socket and ratchet extention)

M271: replace spark plugs

Do you need to disconnect the battery cables to replace spark plugs on a M271 engine from a 2004 C230K?

I've never heard of having to disconnect the battery on any car to replace the plugs.

BTW for using the search function.

The reason I asked about disconnecting the battery was because both the 2001-2007 Chilton's and Haynes, C-Class Repair Manuals, specify that you must disconnect the negative battery terminal before you remove ignition coils; then you can remove the spark plugs. Installation is the reverse of removal...
But could disconnecting the battery cause the ECU to lose some of its settings therefore requiring re-programming?

See the thread in the stickies about what faults occur after disconnecting battery and how to fix them.

I think I might need to rephrase my question: has anyone successfully replaced ignition coils and spark plugs on a C-Class without first disconnecting the battery?

Yes - most of us. Those manuals are far from perfect.

E8?

So regular torx drivers are sized by T's like T20 and T25, but the inverted torx sockets are sized by E's?

Just clarifying. Thanks!

'04 Mars Red C230K Sport Coupe (not Coup-EH)
Can we get a confirmation of the reach on these spark plugs? I can't find anything on the reach on the OE Bosch, the NGK states 26.5mm. However, many car parts sites list plugs with 19mm reach for this engine. There's also a post around here by TEAMREDLINE regarding the reach (claims it should be 26.5, not 19 as listed most places).

It's quite confusing (and frustrating) to get three possible answers: 19mm, 26.5mm, or "it doesn't matter. (that's from the parts desk at the dealership)" Which one is it?

Doesn't matter is of course, wrong (dealer parts guys). The threads are very long, longest plugs I have ever installed. Unfortunately I do not have an old plug but I am fairly sure it is the 26.5mm. If the plug is not long enough it will sit up in a hole and probably not fire properly.

If you are very concerned I would just take one out and measure it. It takes no time at all. This is what I would do if I was not planning to buy at the dealer. Even though your dealer seems a bit scary.
