yeah I think you have the folded seats then. There are two handles on the top part of the trunk where the rear windshield comes down to the trunk. One handle on each side. Pull them and you can fold your seats down.

I was trying to put the damn seats down the other night, having owned the car for about 2 days and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to do it....of course i didn't look in the trunk.
But now I know and knowing is half the battle.

Very rare option in the highly leased w203...Especially the Sport...
Kinda lame that it was not STANDARD....Seems like it was a wasted $300 option, most likely cost Mercedes-Benz more to develop, engineer, tool, produce, ship, store, train factory workers, and install the two different versions than just say, "They all are folding"..."One assembly, one way."
Also, the FOLDING SEAT and the NONFOLDING SEAT cars have the SAME CHASSIS...they BOTH are designed with a PASS through, unlike the w202.

It's a little more subtle, but you can also tell if you have the split-fold seat option by looking at your rear shelf where the rear speakers are housed. On this shelf, in addition to the speakers and the safety seat anchor covers, there will be another oval plastic cover-like piece with a rectangular piece inside. This is the "unlock" indicator. When the seats are unlocked or not fully locked back into place, the little rectangular piece will pop up showing it's side which is painted red, to notify you that the seats aren't locked. If your shelf has this little piece, then you'll have the split-fold option.
Kind of why M-B didn't make this a standard feature across the board, but rather a $295 (in 2005) option. Ghey !! And yep, that's one of the very few options my '05 C230 Sport does not have.
