Strange noise & warr. almost up????
My warranty is almost up and I want to send her in to get anything I can get done.
I have the strangest noise coming from the rear of the car, only under acceleration.
Mild to full throttle I get this RATTLING noise from the back of the car like a strut or something is loose back there. Also it is most noticable on "slight" bumpier roads under acceleration.
Had it at Cherry Hill Mercedes (MAN DO THEY SUUUCCCKKKKK) a Month ago and it wouldn't do it at all. It seems to happen on cooler days and for some reason & when it is wet out.
Anyone else had this happen?

Felt like a bushing was bad kind of deal?
Mine sounds from under the hump in between the front & rear seat.
Do you know if this has been issue with these cars before?
Thanks in advance.

There was a TSB about a scraping noise coming from the transmission tunnel being caused by a heat shield that wasn't installed correctly. I thought it was what mine was, but it wasn't. Mine was coming from the same area you describe and sounded like a scraping/thumping noise over bumps when accelerating. I've not read about this being a common issue.

I agree on the engine mount. A broken engine mount will cause the car to feel very different, and if not fixed, will cause a lot of stress on the other mounts that could lead to other damage.

Also get them to check the rear gearbox mount & the propshaft center bearing.
Edit - and the propshaft flex discs.

Great thanks for all the info Guys!! I am not getting any type of scraping noise at all though. It is just a bap, bap, bap, bap, bap that gets faster the harder your on the gas, again usually when colder and wet out?

If it's a propshaft issue it will be road speed related. Make sure you don't have a loose piece of honeycomb in the cat converter. It can also make strange noises.

Listen to the sound clip of PA Petes damaged CAT - you would not believe the clatter.
Check that rear GB mounting.

That's exactly the symptoms I had on my 2002 C240! The repetitive sound was proportional to how fast the rear wheels were turning (not necessarily the throttle), and it sounded like just like you described. It took Mercedes 4 years and 7 visits (for various things) to find the problem... which was thermal insulation/shielding below the rear seat that had loosened and "drooped" down and was touching the drive shaft. The faster the drive shaft spins (ie: the faster the rear wheels spin), the faster the insulation/shielding would rub, and thus the faster the sound! I couldn't believe how long it took the dealership to find this problem...

The solution was to attach it back to where it was supposed to be (I'm thinking either staple gun or glue... knowing the dealership I went to).

This is back on my car, which is on its 3rd gearbox/rear mount. Replacing the mount does make the problem go away, but this last one didn't keep it away but about 5 months and 10k miles.
Like the OP, this ONLY happens if the engine is under load. There's a stretch of road near my house where it makes the noise every time. I've trained myself now to release the gas pedal at that point to avoid the noise, but it makes the car seem old.
Glyn can you show a diagram of what I need checked?

I sometimes use my iphone video camera to try an capture little noises that are intermittent. Not the best sound quality but better than nothing. I can then show the dealer there is something going on.
