Gas Mistake

So I just went to go fill up gas at this new gas station and I accidently filled up regular with a octane of 87!! . But regularly I always fill up premium with a octane rating of 91.

Now have I made a big mistake?? Will this ruin anything on my car?? Should I start syphoning the gas out lol, or should I just run it with the 87, till my next fill up and put premium in at my next fill up???

a quarter mile at a time
yes your car will explode soon

no you'll be fine. Just fill up with 91 next time.

Yes you will be fine, but if it bothers you just fill up in a quarter of a tank or so to cut it. Not that you need to. Just so you know, my grandfather, the previous owner of my car, always used 87. It only went 8,000 miles with that, but in comparison 1 tank is NOTHING.

Rome wasn't built in a day, a Benz won't be ruined with one tank of gas.

At an oil change for my first Benz, they put in regular oil, and I freaked out, so I know the feeling.

I think I read somewhere that when you start the engine up the "knocking sensor" checks for octane and adjusts the fuel burn rate accordingly...and using lower octane fuel could in the long run cause premature wear of the knocking sensor.

Maybe you should use this as an excuse to take your car for one long drive to burn off all the low octane fuel in your tank...lol...lesser the number of starts....lesser the number of knocking sensor checks!

The knock sensor is a microphone. You will not wear it out by starting the car.

If you use the wrong octane, just fill up with super when the gauge is at 1/2 tank, then run until the low fuel light comes on and refill with premium.

Don't worry man - just use it and go back to premium

Wow! I can't believe people can actually take things to that extreme and assume that your engine will be destroyed with the wrong octane. We are definantly fortunate to have members like you to be the voice of reason!

Be thankful you didn't pull a dumb-a** move like me... I was living in Tokyo at the time, and was a new driver (I'm from the US). So one morning while I was hung over driving home from a friends house, I noticed I was about to run outta gas... so I stopped at the gas station to fuel up. Unfortunately, all the fuel types were written in kanji, so I had no hope of reading them. I decided I would just get the cheapest fuel, since I was driving a 1995 Honda Prelude that I paid approximately $500 USD for. I pumped it up... got back in the car, and drove about 10-15 before the car just shut off. After trying to restart it for about 10 minutes, a gas attendant came out, asked to see my receipt and exclaimed "Ahhhhhh, deesho!", I had to think about this for a second... then it hit... DIESEL!!! ;-( FYI, in case you've ever wondered, green pump handles are UNIVERSALLY for diesel fuel... duhhh. In the end it cost me about $250 - $50 for the tank of diesel, $150 for the fuel drain and system flush, $50 to fill it up with correct fuel. lol But yea... I feel your pain... just to a greater extent. ;-)

P.S.
Most fuel stations are full-service in Japan... so this was my first time at a self-serve. hahah I never went back to a self-serve.

This happens more often than you think. The worse situation is a cocktail of diesel & gasoline. The car runs OK as long as there is not too much diesel but the diesel does not fully combust & drains into the sump & you suffer rising oil level that confounds many. Of course diesel contaminated engine oil is not the greatest lubricant.

I thought so, but lately I have been seeing green as the gasoline, and the black as the diesel. It confused me the first couple of times. I think that this is at Gate stations.

And my friend's dad has an '87 Porsche 911 in the same color that looks IDENTICAL to yours. I have fallen in love with it!

Maybe in the US, but it's NOT true in Canada, not at Husky where I fill up at least. ALL their pump handles are green.

Most countries like SA that still sell some leaded or LRP use the smaller diameter nozzle on the pump for unleaded. The diesel, LRP & leaded nozzles won't fit in an unleaded filler neck. This works well.

Thanx, it's actually an '83, been in the family since '86, she's got a convertible sister in the garage (also an '83 - for sale ;-)).

I wish all gas stations had the different diameter hoses, that would save a few people from making that mistake.

My brother drives a TL and fills up premium also. Once at a gas station after filling up he drove off and within minutes his car shut down and wouldnt start again. It was still under warranty luckily and the dealership told him he put in diesel. But he knew that wasn't true. So he phoned the gas station and what happened was they made a mistake and accidently put diesel in the premium side. So he filed a complaint with them and got compensated! So it worked out.

someone lost their job i am surprised the gas station owned up to it i was on vacation somewhere and their was a huge article in the local paper about some station having water in the gas and ruining over 10 cars. but the station blamed it on something else and said that their was no water in there tanks even after some testing had been done and found contamination. i wonder what ever happened with all that

And theres of course the age old story of people seeing gas delivery trucks dumping the same fuel from the same tap in the truck into all three reservoirs in gas stations.....

and of course the same truck delivering to say shell and to "beaver gas" who sell gas at significantly different prices...

I would love to be able to follow a gas delivery truck someday and see if he delivers to different gas stations...but kinda hard to spend a day hangin out outside a gas station waiting for the damn truck to show up...
