That is not so. The 5W-40 meets 229.51 for diesel engines with Cat & particulate filters. Benz put out a global bulletin late last year that no product could be claimed to meet both 229.5 (Ash level 0.8 to 1.6) and 229.51 (ash level<0.8) - read the Definitive oil thread.

Mobil 1 5W-40 does not meet 229.5 - It fails high temperature high shear - HTHS. And has the wrong additive concentration.

Mobil 1 0W-40 Euro Car Formula that does meet 229.5 specs is READILY available. Even Wal-Mart carries it here. There is no excuse, IMO.

Maybe this the oil that my MB was talking about... Mobil 1 ESP 5-40. I need to clarify this w/ them.

Mobil 1 ESP formula M is an advanced performance synthetic engine oil designed to provide exceptional cleaning power, wear protection, and overall performance. Engineered to prolong the life and maintain efficiency in Emission Reduction Systems in both diesel and gasoline engines.

If you are using Mobil 1 it is 0W-40 Euro formulation. Meeting 229.5

Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic as available in the American Market is for passenger car diesel at level 229.31 Not suitable for Benz gasoline engines. It's low ash & not even 229.51

well there appears to be a discrepancy between manufacturer claims and what MB is saying

http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevoli...nt_action=show

what is mobil 1 0w40 ESP? my mobil 1 bottles dont say ESP on them, i dont think.

Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 appears to be a more premium oil

There is misunderstanding here.

229.5 approvals are for gasoline engines >0.8 to 1.6 % ash
229.51 approvals are for PC diesel engines with Cat & particulate filters <0.8 ash

Benz have decreed that no one product can claim both specs

229.51 is not a higher spec than 229.5 - it is a different spec. One is diesel & the other gasoline.

ah, i see now that mb says that 229.51 is for diesel ONLY

so these are some 40 weight 229.5 approved oils:

M1 0w-40
Valvoline Synpower 5w-40 HST
Lubro Moly 5w-40 Synthoil High Tech
