Cool Hooray! My mileage finally improved

Well, I drove San Francisco to Seattle and got 31 mpg in an '02 c230k going about 75 to 80. I have much less environmental guilt now.

This is so much better than the car has done in the past, I guess everyone was right when they said my mileage would improve over time. It just took 15,000 miles.

Cheers,

Beth

I've noticed that around 75mph is kind of a sweet spot. I get better mileage at that speed than I do either under or over it.

Cheers, BT

damn.... so u guys are telling me that my gas mileage isn't going to get better for a while eh? more reason to do 120 . j/k.... i actually have been getting 25-29mpg for the first 1200 miles, so I would assume that under normal driving conditions this car is actually not bad on fuel consumption

If youve got enviromental guilt, I suspect that you wouldn't be driving an MB. Your Insight is calling, or perhaps a Saturn, with its recycled plastic bodywork.

So, why can't one be an environmentalist and like a little power? I test drove that Insight -- 0 to 60 in 30 mintues. :p

enviro-guilt

Forget the Saturn, it's a gas-guzzler. Get a smart cdi cabriolet. 75 mpg AND recycled plastic panels, what could be better? It says "Mercedes-Benz" on the engine, too.

Or better still, a racing bicycle. Yeah, that's it

I used to work in the bike industry and I got a few nice bikes out of the deal, they just are not good on long trips.

You ride a bike? On the same streets that you have trouble parking on because they are too steep! I don't think an Insight would make it in SF, you need the power. Surprised you haven't done a pulley kit, it would make launching on those steep streets more fun....

The Insight is actually pretty peppy at low speeds...its electric motor adds some usuable torque. Hills aren't a problem...as long as your in no hurry to get up them A guy at work has one, and the mileage BTW, is nowhere near the 61/74 they claim. He gets 45-55mpg...not much better than a diesel Veedub.

I had 2 diesel 190D's and they got terrific fuel mileage, not the 50 mpg highway they advertised but I got a consistant 42 mpg (vs. the 22 mpg I get on my coupe. I went to the veedub dealer and they told me they get very few diesels, maybe 2-3 Jettas a year and it's not because of demand, that's just what VW will send them. The VW Lupos with it's 95 mpg would be the ticket. A shot of propane to light it up once in a while and you're set....

I just got back from my annual trip to Daytona for Bike Week, and I got 32 mpg driving 70-75 mph. I was surprised it was so good since MB doesn't even rate it that well. I think all the oil it uses must help the gas milage My gas gauge also quit working once, but seems to be working again. Is this a sign of bad things to come? This car is such a PITA.

Keep an eye on it - might be the fuel senders going bad.

Sorry, BT

Beth, I was worried as well when I first got mine. never as bad as yours on those SF hills but not as good as I was expecting. I now have 22K on my 2002 230K. Just drove to Maine from Washington DC: 1665 mi round trip. The car finished the trip with 31.7 mpg average. That is including getting stuck in a 90 min traffic jam in NY on the way up. For parts of it I actually had a 34 mpg average. I can live with that. Steve

The luckiest I ever got was around 28.5 on a trip to San Diego, but I suppose maintaining 90+ MPH for most of the way didn't help? :p

My averange usually sits around 22-24, depending on traffic conditions for the day. I didn't expect exceptional mileage from the beginning, and so far, except for stop-n-go traffic, I haven't been disappointed.

Don't worry too much for the C230k though, the C320 coupe gets worse mileage. (>_<)

i tempted ti take a trip to san francisco or denver just to see how good the mileage on long drives on cruise control, because around here i mostly get stop and go, with the freeway rarely going a constant 60+

I have never been able to break 27.6mpg no matter how hard I try. My last trip to SD, i averaged 70mph, but only got about 26.8mpg

That's pretty good, you shift up around 2000 RPM. I've done 31.4 MPG on about 34 mph stop and go traffic on the freeway. 37 miles slightly going down.

Also had a Wolfsburg edition 1983 Scirocco that I drove to 230,000 miles after my brother gave it to me with over 100,000 miles. I wanted to drive it 226,000 miles which is the nearest distance the moon ever gets from the earth if I remember correctly. I just couldn't drive it back to earth and ended up trading it in for $200.

I actually beat that driving back from the Sierras. It was the miles and miles of downhill on slow roads. I hit about 43 mpg for a while.
