Question Daimler Confirms Mercedes C-Class U.S. Production in 2014

Am I the only one that didn't know this! I don't want some dirty redneck drunk *** building my new C-Class! Is it true that some are still going to be built in Germany? I'll be checking the built in sticker on my new C-Class in 2014.

I appologize if I offended anyone from Alabama!

Mercedes have plants everywhere in the world.
They've been building a lot of ML and GL in Alabama and both of them are very good quality. I don't see why building a C here is a bad thing!

Your attitude is a fail.

To my knowledge, there is nothing but anecdotal "evidence" that US built cars from foreign name-plates are worse than the foreign built ones. I don't want to hear anything about "..but the first generation ML was built in Alabama.." because the early W203s were built in Germany and they, too, were horribly unreliable. The reliability nightmare that haunts Benz to this day has to do with cost cutting (among other things), but not where the cars were built.

Also.. come on.. do you really think that Mercedes-Benz is going to allow intoxicated workers to assemble cars. The company sets the standards.

What a terrible view of manufacturing. Really it shows how little you know.

You forgot about BMW's Spartanburg SC factory. Building X series BMW since 1994. Won't buy an X SUV either?

That would only be true if they were assembling them in Georgia.

I toured that plant once on the way home from a trip to New Orleans; pretty impressive. The main problem with the 1st gen ML, imho, was just that it was so sloppy of a design and there was such a rush to get an SUV out in the market that it was really a bit doomed from the start.

As has been said, many companies now produce their cars in the US (Honda, Toyota, Subaru, BMW, new Hyundai, etc.) that it's not an issue. Hell, we should be happy that someone's building something here still.

Lol didn't they build some of the early w203s in brazil or something?

Anyways, yeah people knew about it for a long time. I believe there just going to convert the alabama plant that makes the R-class and other crossover suv/ mini van into c-class production since the suv/cross over crazy is over.

Mercedes has too since our weak dollar causes profit losses due to currency exchange rates. Its kinda funny that our weak dollar is causing reverse outsourcing.

I believe lexus will eventually do the same thing.

Perhaps I was a little rude and I appologize for that, but IMO the American cars companies really put a bad taste in my month when it comes to quality of construction. I guess it's not so much construction as it is engineering. I'm glad that someone can get paid 70K to screw in a few bolts here in America, better here than in India or Mexico I guess.

I'm still going to look to make sure mine is built in Germany.

With your attitude toward American skills, it would be interesting to know how your value your own skills and the quality you put into your job. Let the rest of us know what you do for a living so we can give that product a wide berth.

Most of your W204's at present are built in South Africa - we have the contract
You can have a German one built by Turkish labour
You will shortly be getting the new one built by the cotton pickers of Tuscaloosa
The Vietnamese plant does the best job IMHO
Chinese production is going well
Most early 203s to the US were built in Brazil
The first ML was a dog
The new ML is fully designed in Germany - Tuscaloosa is doing a fair job
Best ML's are built in Graz, Austria - mainly diesel.

Agree! American cars that made in Mexico are cheapo!
However, American cars that made in US actually better than some european cars!

I think nowadays manufacturing is so mechanized that it does not matter where you build a product. The manufacturing technique as well as the proper engineering and design of the components to be assembled are what is important. For example it does not matter how well an accelerator pedal is installed in a 2010 Toyota Camry. If it was engineered incorrectly, it will not function properly no matter who installed it or where it is installed.
OTOH, I read reports that Nissan had such a hard time finding an educated workforce for their Alabama plant ( maybe another southern state) a few years ago, that they had to use many large and very detailed picture diagrams to train their workers on how to assemble a Nissan Titan.

Well, we always have the hope that few people have such pride in being a loser as you.

American cars turn me off, too, for the record. The design/appearance of the exterior and the design/materials of the interiors are often insulting. I had a 2009 Pontiac G6 GT for a rental last year. The utterly garbage quality materials that made up its interior were screwed together tightly. The quality of the work was fine. The quality of the materials was a joke.

I'll never buy a car from a domestic nameplate, but that's just me. I acknowledge that they've really improved but, IMO, too little, too late.

Mercedes-Benz (regardless of final assembly point) is not a domestic make. It's German, even if it is built in Alabama.

Mississippi would be the other southern state where Titans are built.

Say it with me "Thank God for Mississippi".

That's our motto here in Alabama.
