i know this is a really really old post, but does anyone have pics of where the mic is located. THANKS!
I don't have pics, unfortunately, but you can't see the mic until you've pulled it out. If you feel around the area on the passanger side of the roof, right by the dome light, you'll feel a small hole in the metal behind the fabric. The mic is behind that. THe way to get the mic out is to pull out the dome light, then kinda reach inside and fish around the passenger side of the area in there, until you feel two thin wires together.. pull those out and the microphone will snap out of it's bracket, then you can disconnect it.
I'm looking for directions on how to remove the dome light assembly in a 2005 c230ss. I'm having the same problem after installing a 12" JL audio sub with a 500/1 JL Audio Amp and a 300/1 JL audio amp. I need to get that microphone out but can't seem to get the dome light assembly out!
good job on finding this thread. Problem is you are going to have to search more because I remember seeing a pic posted on the mic so I know it's floating around here. Problem is everyone keeps adding stupid repetative threads on here so after a while the search option doesn't seem to work as well. Sorry I couldn't give you any further info..... Best of luck...

Maybe you saw the pictures that were in this thread. They're no longer here because of the server crash a while ago I think. I've been trying to find a safe way to remove the dome light assembly as well, and I'm a little afraid because I don't want to rip the fabric around it. Should I just pry it with a flathead ?
I think the pictures used to be in this thread but aren't there anymore. I'm going to take the car back to my stereo shop and have them do it. I pried with a flat head a little bit and it didn't come right out so I don't want to mess it up.
vadder13 : Not correct! if microphone will be found AND disabled, i'm 100% sure that the problem will be gone. It's as simple as that. I'm not gonna spend another $1500 or so for new speakers, head unit and stuff. I now have the audio 10 cassette-radio, the cd changer and the bose system, it costed already more then enough !
And... I'm convinced that a microphone is somewhere... outthere, I only have to find it AND I WILL !!!!
Hey Guys,
I changed everything out except my head/navi unit. I installed 2-amps 2-subs and replaced all interior speakers. I had the same volume spike nightmare when I 1st did this. All you have to do is turn the mic-volume off/disable and you are all set as wimpytron correctly addressed.
Exactly what I was gonna do. But then there are lots of confusing info and looks like everyone has a different way to do it. From the most straightforward to the budget nightmare approach. I was thinking to collect all the info, summarize it, put some pics, and propose it as a sticky to the mods. Well, maybe someday if I have the time. Thanks for the pic Johncl.
Same problem goes for my w220 2002... installed a kick *** subs/extra amp setup, works perfect if the subs are set to normal volume with the amp's remote... full blast, every other (bose) speakers volume randomly spikes up SO HIGH it almost gave my mother a heart failure. hahaha....
Anyone knows if that mic is hidden in the same spot up there at the dome lights? Do I take off the two transparent light covers and a hole to feel the mic can be found there on the right side? Or need to take off the whole assembly of the read view mirror to expose all it's guts & wires praying to not snip the wrong ones to detach/cut away/kill that mic?
Any help would be appreciated before I get the tool box & start a mayhem ... Thanks a million guys!
PS: Once y'all fellow Benz connoisseur & enthusiasts guide me like a test-dummy, through this ordeal (lol), I'll post pics of the mic+wires, the before & after, complications if any, end result if solved or not that auto adjusting psychotic and rather chaotic volume sudden increase issue.. etc... so if anyone else in the same shoes as moi, can simply log in here & get this info in one shot!

Reason: Will update with pics once y'all give me a hand with this one!
NOTE THAT I CANNOT BE HELD LIABLE FOR ANYTHING YOU DO TO YOUR CARS OKAY? Try it at your own free will... Worked for my S Class. Hope it does for yours too if you dare...
Once I popped the lenses of both dome lights, and pushed in the 4 metal clips holding the rear view mirror+dome lights assembly, it exposed the wires & guts...... First I unplugged the smallest dual wire harness I could find.... drove for 45 mins, had 10+ volume sudden increases.. that wire didn't work...was prolly the teleaid mic. Then unplugged the only other set of small wires... DROVE ALL DAY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MORE ISSUES AT ALLLLLL!!!!!!! Volume at any levels I chose, the amp's bass as loud or little as I chose.... not a SINGLE sudden volume jump. For me, case closed.
Hope this help! Let me know if you got a 2000 - 2003 w220, I can give you a hand quick guide if you are whiling to take all responsibilities of what might happen as damages during the process of disconnecting wires or potentially ripping them off or hurting / scratching / damaging the plastic or metal parts holding the assembly, etc.....
Oh and I am talking about the premium Bose sound system here with stock amp (kept all original speakers minus sub, very good sound already ) disconnected the stock sub (left it in place.. didn't wanna tear the whole back apart), ran the wires from stock amp to secondary amp (JL audio 1000/1v2) to the brand new setup (JL Audio 13W7AE x 2 in a custom box)... The only two problems I found were that auto adjusting crazy volume jump, and that my license plate & its carbon fiber cover rattled like a machine gun.. (had to add a thick plastic foam like sheet between trunk/plate and double sided tape all around the edges of the carbon fiber cover.)
Look at the attached photo, the wires I refer to, are tucked in the left area between the roof & the mount spacing gap area... the two skinniest looking wire sets, in the harness bundle.

I have a HUGE problem with Bose's Audio Pilot after installing aftermarket AMP and SUBs. The volume would jump up and down like it has a mind of its own. I'm not talking about just + or - 9dB. This is way way louder than that. It can be so loud that I had to switch off the system entirely now. And it's definately NOT gradual increase in volume, it's sudden increase that can give you a heart attack.
Mind you, this is not a question about SPEED SENSITIVE AUDIO ADJUSTMENT. This is about Audio Pilot feature on BOSE systems that senses the ambient noise and 'tries' to adjust it. I understand it CANNOT be turned off by the dealership or the BOSE.
After reading this forum, I've tried cutting microphone wire that's located near the rear view mirror and removed the entire headlamp assembly in search of additional microphone but none that I could find.
Is there any other microphone to sense the ambient noise in BOSE systems?
Anybody with BOSE system + aftermarket SUBs had this problem before? Any solutions? I really want to keep the factory HU and the factory speakers.
Any help would be appreciated.
Aside from that the whole set up is AWESOME! The installer did a GREAT job and it looks sweet. Now I end up just looking at instead of listening to it!!
I'll post pics after developing it (no digital camera).
Thanks in advanced

I would be driving down the street and it would BLAST at full volume killing my ears and everyone would look like WTF.. i didn't read the thread so ill do that now haha

Hopefully in this thread you'll find a solution for your sweet looking ride there..

I can't stop. Addicted.
The body got used to it all because of crazy long 5 to 8 hours road trips for business few times a month...
Calling it "lungs massage therapy". hahahaha
Everything from watching movies with crazy special effects that makes you **** in your pants as you drive as it's so sudden & loud.. or going nuts on classic rock from the 60s/70s, hip hop or drum and bass playlists, commercial radio at times.. hell, you ever listen to Howard Stern full blast with subs' volume through the roof?!?! LOLLLLL
it is because that is a telephone microphone !! inside the plastic cover with "map" and "read" lights in it, there is the Bose microphone, it is on the right side, that little grilled area. on the left, there is also a grilled area, but there is no whole in it. I taped it off with tape and foam, and the problem is not yet gone, but the instant volume increase is nearly gone, even with very loud bass. i will disable / cut it of eventually, but then i need to do it very carefully, as i want my total car in perfect condition if i sell it ;-)
I assume , if i disconnect / cut off, the microphone that the problem will be eliminated 100%. also you can disconnect the pins 1, 2 and 3 on the bose ampllifier, because these pins are "responsible" for the bose microphone (found it on the internet at the specs of a w220 bose amplifier)
if you don't see it, i will post a picture ! let me know !
Can you email me this pic I cannot see it on the site And need to 86 that mic
I have a 2004 clk convertible and just installed a amp and sub now the volume is going crazy . Can anyone help me with finding the mic , I think my dome light is different than the coupe . I appreciate any help with this !
02 ML320 in the house.
The same mic is in the ML. I've had mine for 9mo now and the volume flux was driving me crazy. It's 0430 and after ready the final solution I went and done the deed.
Finding the mic was like. O'hell yeah!
2 weeks ago I paid Merc $35 to disable the system. $35's wasted.
I've been searching forever. So I will spread the word to the ML crowd.
And here is the demon with his fingers on the volume controls
Here it is, remove the lense to the map lights, push two clips then pull down the overhead controls, to the right, of the hole just in front is a brown and white wire. Here is the picture of the microphone causing all these problems, yank it out and you are done- guaranteed!!! Overhead Brown and white wires leading to.......... This microphone, front and to the right -take this out and no more problems. And by the way, 30 years
