Down shift, check engine light, V8 grumble, power loss, and a burning smell. (20 sec)

I made a pass and downshifted, but I all of a sudden lost 20 percent of my power, the check engine light popped on, and my exhaust note sounded of a Mustang GT's (extremely low grumble). At the next light, I turned off my engine and restarted, the normal exhaust note was restored, power was restored, but my check engine light was not put to rest!

What the heck just happened?!

best place to start is hook it up to a diagnostics and get the code for the check engine light. Checkers or schucks or autozone will do this for free.

I don't know much about the C240 and if the problem is the coil pack but if you are going to do the work yourself let me know and I can pull up a how to document.

Good Luck

Yes sir, I will be this weekend! Summer vacation. That'd be greatly appreciated.

Is it okay to drive the car as is at the moment if I don't floor it? Just treating it nicely?

yea this is a pretty easy job. Check your plugs too. Ive got 165,000 miles on my 240 and my coils seem to be fine, although i should replace them soon.

Honestly I have no idea. So I really can't comment on that (don't want to give you the wrong answer).

hmm not sure if its going to be much of a problem driving on it. Im wondering if the fuel that still getting sprayed into the cylinder will get burned or just get filled in the cylinder which i think is bad for the rings but i am not too sure. Maybe someone else with more knowledge on this could chime in and answer correctly.

Replace Spark Plug and Ignition Coil

When you take off the ignition coil you should see the spark plug. I attached both documents.

Good Luck

You lost 20% power in C240? I guess it's a good thing you weren't going uphill.

(hope you laughed and thus, I improved your day)

1999 CLK320 (sold), 2007 C230 SS (gone), 2000 Grand Marquis, 2011 CR-Z, stay tuned...
I had some misfire problems in my CLK (3.2L m272). My dealership screwed me a few times over the course of a month (went through plugs and wires, vacuum hoses, then the O2 and MAF sensor which was the actual problem). I drove the car between visits, with it only misfiring if I was hard on the throttle... This was at 200,000 miles, I sold it at 232,000, and it's been more than a year since I sold it - it's still running fine. I really think you'll be ok.

HAH. Yeah man, I was getting passed by scooters.

So I'm not having misfires when my car isn't stuttering, right? Just the timing is off? If I had a bad misfire, my check engine light would flash, correct?

I still have to drive it, and I'm just not flooring it. Haven't stuttered yet. I need to do this asap. Thanks for the support!

Yes, the check engine light will flash if you have another code thrown... Did you clear the code when you checked it? If so, you will be fine unless the engine light comes on again. I just remembered, the check engine light came on right after I got the CLK - I don't remember anything happening, but it was the misfire code. I drove for months with the light on - nothing happened under normal (which means "spirited") driving. Then one day the light flashes, the car jolts, and I went to the worst dealer in the world!

+1 - & clear code to see if it comes back. I think you invoked limp mode somehow. Can happen with a clumsy downshift

Don't take any crap from Matt - You drive the best of the bunch apart from the AMGs & diesels. The C240 was the favourite of the European motoring scribes for all the right reasons. Let Matt be happy with his all **** and fart lawnmower. Fortunately in the US when you upgrade to a 204 you won't be able to get a I4 in one. That's progress!

Yes - a Karo downshift could cause limp mode!

I watched 3 soccer games with friends in my home theatre on my big Sony XBR8 while keeping tabs on F1 practice in Canada. I live 12Km's from the Cape Town stadium. Happy to let the visitors brave the winter weather - eat MacDonalds & drink crap Budweiser. No food & booze allowed in stadiums other than sponsors stuff

Nice, I wish I could invite my buddies over . The games are very early in the morning 4AM and don't want to wake the houshold and neighbors. During the Argentina game I yelled so loud my dad came running into the living room and said what happened. Told him look at Argentina's amazing goal . Yes, I'm 24 and still live with my parents (only child and gotta take care of them you know )

Game is about to start Algeria vs Slovenia (Go Slovenia)

I think I'm the only one watching the game here in the west coast.

Go Slovenia indeed!

You must tell me how you think we are doing with hosting the World Cup. Remember we are only a country of 7 million registered tax payers including trusts & companies with great poverty. There is still a huge disparity between wealthy & poor. Our social grants exceed 12 million people - population approx 40 million. This is a big & expensive deal for us. We are doing our best - we are not Germany! I think our stadiums are very good considering this. We are blessed with generally good infrastructure. World cup ticket sales are 97/98% - not bad.

Let me know what you think we look like from outside the country.

You guys are doing a great job. Based on your signature and the World Cup I would have never guessed South Africa is doing bad

Only one thing I would change. Can you guys start the games maybe 3 hours late so I can get some beauty sleep? I messed up my whole sleep cycle because of the World Cup

If you don't mind me asking what made you move to South Africa? I believe you use to live in the states correct?

Goal Slovenia!!!

Edit:
Slovenia FTW

Hmmm to watch Ghana battle Serbia (I think Serbia has this) and miss the Germany game or to get some shut eye and watch the Germany game? I think i'll watch the Germany game. See you guys later.

South Africa is doing fine but we still suffer a lot of poverty & we're a small economy compared with a country like Germany. You know - the good old problem - lots of wealthy people & lot's of poor people & not enough in between.

EDIT - Moved back to SA because it's home & a spectacularly beautiful country. Sorry - missed your question. Love US & Asia & parts of Europe & Latin America, especially Thailand, Tuscany in Italy & Rio in Brazil. But they are not HOME!
