Ball seat R#

Is there anyway to measure the ball seat diameter on a set of wheels?

I've got a set of wheels from oewheelsllc.com, the salesman was clueless except to tell me I need M12x1.5 threaded bolts with a ball seat. While test fitting the rims I noticed my lug bolts do not sit properly in the new wheels (they have lots of play). So I'm banking on the ball seat being the wrong size. With my calipers I was able to measure that I need a 30mm shank but I dont know what ball seat R# I should use.

Stock bolts on the w203 are R12, so if they have play then I would try R13's. Here's a good thread with some more info. A good place to start is to see what model car your wheels were made for.

The wheels are replica E55 amg wheels. So maybe M12x1.5 R14 will fit. (I've noticed they are really hard to find in a 30mm shank).

Is there a way to know for sure or is it just guess and check? What would happen if I got a ball seat that was too large?

Forgive my ignorance this is my first car with lug bolts. I've noticed on the stock wheels when I drop in the lug bolts they stick straight out and don't jiggle around. On the new wheels they sag like nothing is holding them. I assumed that means that the R# is wrong (was this assumption correct?)

That's because the bolt hole openings are bored out for a M14 bolt not an M12, this isn't a big issue.

Check the ball seat by dropping your existing lug bolt into the bolt hole opening and see if it seats properly. Sounds like most likely, it dosen't fit snugly, and the bolt head radius will be too small (R12 vs possible R14). If these wheels were for a E55, then I'd say you should try to find some M12x1.5, R14 bolts in the proper shank length.

Is it even possible to buy M12x1.5 thread lugs but with a R14 head?

R12 means Radius = 12mm (diameter = 24mm)
R13 means Radius = 13mm (diameter = 26mm)
R14 means Radius = 14mm (diameter = 28mm)

American & Canadian are 23.5mm diameter
Canadian Loonie (dollar coin) are 26mm diameter
Canadian Toonie (2 dollar coin) are 28mm diameter

Check the diameter of some of the coins in your wallet/coin jar. If you can't find coins with the desired diameter, then go to homedepot hardware section and find a metal washer with the desired diameter.

Next, get some play-doh and place it into empty ball seat of wheel. Dig out the play-doh with above coin/washer,... start with larger diameter first and work your way to smaller diameter. The radius of the coin/washer that digs out the deepest play-doh (closest to base of ball seat) should be the radius you have on ball seat.

BTW, since these are aftermarket replica wheels, are you sure they're ball seat,... sometimes they're cone seat. Feel the seat with your finger to make sure.
