Oil change

Hey guys, I did search before this so please dont flame.. I did get a thread that was helpful too. But I'am however confused, i ran into a thread about the c230 oil change, but it seems to be for the new 08+ models.

My sister has an 07 c230, and I was going to do the oil on it.
What type of oil, and how many quarts?

And also, I'am doing it the basic way (from bottom) will the bolt need to be replaced? Thanks guys!

The 07 C230 has the 2.5 litre M272 engine. Requires about 8.5 quarts with filter change - this is in the owners manual but never quiet ties up as you can't get every drop of old oil out of the engine.

You require oil meeting Benz spec 229.5 - Mobil 1 Euro formulation 0W-40 meets this spec. Make sure you use a "fleece" Mann + Hummel oil filter - available in Mann packaging, Genuine Benz packaging & a few other rebrands like Bosch & K&N

The drain plug is microencapsulated with sealant. If you want to reuse it - use one of the non hardening sealants from Locktite or similar to make sure it does not weep.
Good luck!

This is what a fleece filter looks like - on no account use cheap paper filters.

Does this apply to the '02 coupes as well? I used a paper filter during my last oil change (not knowing that it wasnt the fleece filter!!)

glyn, thank you so much for your informative post!

Question, is there a washer that is in between the bolt and crankcase?

If you've read through the prior threads, why are you draining the oil from the bottom?

If you have a M111 engine there was never a fleece filter available. If you have an M271 engine then there is no longer a fleece filter available in the US. Don't know about Canada. Used to be mandatory for 13,000 mile, 20,000Km oil drains & IMHO still should be.

For ROW readers/members a fleece filter is still available for M271 & all larger petrol engines

Glyn,

I enjoy reading your posts. 0W-40 is the oil to use for MB. But in southern California weather, is it necessary to must use 0W-40?

You must use products meeting 229.5 & thus passing the MB HTHS (High Temperature High Shear) test.

I use my old company's 5W-40 229.5 product in my car.

See my Definitive Oil Thread.

Thanks again glyn for the pn.

So I'll need 8.5 quarts of 0-40, and the drain washer.

Tommy, as far as I understand, both ways are ok (bottom or other way)
Glyn, since your the expert it is ok to drain from the bottom right?

Fine either way - just easier to suck out but then you need a Mityvac or similar

Yes, only Glyn has done oil changes.

It's your time, but it would be much better spent ponying up to a topsider and letting it do the work for you, instead of jacking up the car, removing belly pans, removing the drain plug, getting a new ring, throwing all of your now-soiled clothes in the wash, and doing the reverse of all of the above.

+1 on the Topsider or MityVac. Did mine last night on a c55, 22 minutes for oil and filter, almost no mess. Replacing the filter got my hands a bit oily :-).

lets be clear, not just 0w-40, but Mobil1 0w-40 European Formula. Not all 0w-40 are 229.5 approved, nor are all Mobil1 oils 229.5.

They are all about the same just different capacity.

How to use:
insert extractor tube through dipstick tube all the way to the bottom of oil pan
pump the handle a few times
what oil being extracted
a few more pumps if flow rate slows down
pull out extractor tube after you can't get anymore oil out

put in new filter
add oil
check oil level is correct
