DIY 722.9 7G-tronic 7-speed automatic transmission service thread

The condition of the fluid didnt look that bad, it was dark but still red. I didnt see any pieces of metal except for very small shiny specs imbedded in the filter after I cut it open. My records show it was last done at 80,000 miles at an MB dealer, my car now has 156,000 miles. But the filter that was in there was a no name filter, no markings on it at all so im thinking it was done at some point between then.
I drained it, removed the pan and filter, installed the new filter, new pan, with new bolts and new sprags. The sprags on the car looked corroded so I didnt want them touching the new pan. The old pan looked severely rusted on the outside which is why I replaced it. I pumped in 6 quarts of fluid then started the car and it was taking forever to get to 45 C. Shut off the car and cleaned everything up while waiting. Then started the car and pumped in another 2 quarts, went through P-R-N-D several times then I noticed it went past 45 C so shut the car off again. waited a bit then started the car again, went through P-R-N-D another 3 times and it was at 45 C, I opened the shut off valve i had attached to the fill adapter and let the fluid drain, it was taking too long so i unscrewed the fill adapter and the fluid really came out, waited until it was just dribbling then put the plug in. I actually dropped the plug in the bucked of fluid so had to fish it out, finally got it in. Right when I shut the car off the temp was at 47 C. Good enough for me.
I probably shouldnt have even bothered putting the last 2 quarts in since it came back out anyways. I just wasnt sure if i was really that low on fluid. Next time whatever I drain I will just add another quart and put it in. The car drives great. It drove great previously so theres really no change. i still have 4 quarts of fluid left, so because i didnt bother draining the TC im thinking of just pulling the drain plug, let it drain, then put a little more than I removed and recheck the level. give the new fluid enough time to mix with whatever fluid was left in there, then get some more fresh fluid in. I wont even pop off the tube or pull the pan. from the looks of it im thinking just removing the drain plug removed around 2 quarts before popping off the tube.
Heres the old pan:

Installed a Filtran filter.

Do people really think there are 200 different kinds of ATF for 200 different transmission designs, lol...no.
Just use Maxlife.
