What drives a non-Bose subwoofer

WTF
Ok so we need every one with an 02-07 w203 to check there car for a sub. (not us bose or HK guys)
So 03 has a sub lets get some other years because this is strange. It has been said on here numerous times no sub if you don't have upgraded stereo so lets try to figure out what years have this and what years don't also see if c240's have it and maybe c230's don't for 03.
another strange thing is that the sub is upside down compared to the bose sub that is strange.

Hmm! - Looks like it came out of the Alpine Hungary plant or Becker. Looks like it has a dual voice coil.

Very interesting for something I did not know I had. Are you going to leave the hole open to ventilate the trunk or disconnect it & leave it in and let it act as a passive radiator for your new subs?

Something else interesting. The sub seems to be wired out of phase.

Take a look the common (brown) is the same in the plug, so when connected it rotates to the opposite pin.

Can anyone verify the wire color codes for the sub?

I wouldn't think it would be wired out of phase from the factory, but if the brown wires are (-) and the tan and white are (+), then on one side the (+) goes to the inductor and on the other it goes to the capacitor.
The inductor and capacitor make up a simple low pass filter. Normally the (+) to the inductor first and then to the voice coil. The capacitor is wired across the (+) and (-).
Again I'm hoping someone can lookup the wiring color code. It wouldn't be the first time the colors didn't make sense in the real world.

Negate the purpose of having a sub. One voice coil pushing while the other one is pulling. They would cancel each other out. So the wire colors have to not make sense. One brown being (+) and the other (-).

It would make sense for the whole thing to be out of phase to suit it's orientation in the car.

I don't know which system I have, but it is factory. AM/FM/Cassette with CD changer in the glove box, front doors have larger speakers low and tweeters up high. The rear doors only have the larger speakers low. There are what look like two speaker grills in the rear package shelf. From the trunk I don't see those speakers but I do see this, which appears to be a 10" sub.

Ha...the other audio thread led me to this one where I added pictures of my 2-channel setup. Ive been looking for replacements for my Infinity alpha's for a while. MG's might be the answer??

[QUOTE=Glyn M Ruck;4288271]Very interesting. That looks neat but was never originally fitted to my knowledge. Looks OE - Maybe it was an option. The head unit does not have a sub amp in it???
I live in south Africa
I also have the sub woofer on my rear shelf.. i think it was standard?
My merc is 2001 c180 elegance (non kompressor).

Yes - I did some research after this thread was started. If your build tag in your service book says "premium sound" it was standard with the Audio 10. Seems most SA built cars had it. I had owned my car for years before I realised I had a sub. Never bothered to look!

Anyway, I did the battery test to check the polarity of each plug. The brown wires in the photo are indeed the negative on both plugs, despite the orientation of the inductor and capacitor.
Since the speaker is oriented the wrong way the polarity you would think is required is opposite of what the wiring on the plugs suggests ... does the stock wiring harness flip the wires for the sub connection?
I don't have a stock sub in my car so I am assuming no stock wiring is available for me to tap into ... when I hook this up it will be to an aftermarket amp in the trunk.

Hi, I'm also in South Africa and my 2006 C180K Elegance does not have a subwoofer. But I am now looking into installing one on the rear shelf along with a suitable amp.

Fyi the stock sub was powerless in my installation ... I've since moved to a JL Audio box pushed to the front of the trunk floor ... much better
I've looked at it a bit but haven't taken the time to try building a custom enclosure or hanging a box under the deck ... at this point my trunk space isn't at a premium so I can afford to just set a box in place. Plus I can always swap it out quickly whenever I want to try something else.

What do you mean powerless? Is it just very weak or did it run from the deck with no amp?
