NEED HELP TRANS LEAK FROM PAN AREA!!

Hello everyone, I bought a 2002 c230 kompressor coupe and it has started with a transmission leak...The seal has been supposedly replaced at dealer along with filter and fluid...I have taken it back once already they said they checked but couldnt find where leak was coming from they cleaned underneath completely now the next day I literally myself get under the car and took pics and this is what I found! I know I should of taken pics originally but I gave the dealer the benefit of the doubt and hadnt done so..So my question is what other possible causes can cause a leak in pan?The service manager had told me that they will go in again and check the seal that had been replaced...my fear is that is is due to something else???Please help me my husbands on deployment in iraq and this really sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!: smash:

It looks like the rear transmission tail shaft seal is leaking. Tell the dealer to fix it properly. Don't pay again.

It could also be the pan gasket but I think not.

Number 100 in this diagram. If it's not that then it's the pan gasket. Don't panic. It's an easy repair for the dealer. Tell them to wake up & do it properly.

Thanx Glyn I took it back this morning!

Well, I took the car back this morning, and I showed the pics to the service manger. He then said to leave the car for the whole day and they will redo the pan gasket but hopefully it isnt anything else inside instead. So Glyn you think it is that seal in the diagram?? Well I dont know what all is involved with those internal seals and parts but I hope this doesnt turn into a big old mess! At what point should I tell them no to repairs? If the leak doesnt stop??? What do you think the pricing will be like to have this type of problem fixed?

I can't comment on US job pricing, but the seal requires them to remove one end of the propshaft, undo the center nut, pull off the flange, pop out old seal & put in new seal & reassemble. It's an external job. Not very difficult.

If it is not the pan gasket just tell them to replace the rear gearbox oil seal. Let them test it tomorrow & see if it still leaks. Don't worry - we will help you through this.

To Glyn: Flourescent dye??

I called another shop that works on mercedes porsche and bmw and they said they would help me if I continiue to get no where with the dealer..They told me to make sure they redo their work though..thats the thing they say they only do the gasket and fluid I hope they didnt create the leak or made it worse... it was them that told me i HAD the leak in the first place..anyway this other place told me they normally put a liquid in the fluid to trace with a light where it is coming from what are your thoughts on that?

We have been on PM. They have done the pan gasket twice & it is still leaking so it must be the seal. I don't know why they don't just replace it.

Flourescent dye and a UV lamp can certainly help trace leaks but I think this one is pretty obvious - i.e. the rear seal.

+1 - had a similar issue with my C32 a couple of years back, and the the rear seal was the culprit. Thankfully they tried this straight after the pan seal so i only had one extra trip back to the dealer. They did charge me for both jobs though, tran flush, and rear seal replacement.

Dealer has admitted it's the rear seal - given the good lady a loaner - Agreed to pick up the cost.
