Power Steering Flush 2002 C320 Mercedes

Things Needed

Flat Head
Funnel $ 1.50

P/S Fluid (Pentosin), 1 QT AIC CHF11S Price 20.99$
And 30 mins of your time
8MM Wrench

My Mercedes Book

http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Res...word&Nty=1&N=0

1. Remove Splash shield on the lower side of the car.. 6 Screws

Put it to the side..

2. Open hood remove plastic from the right hand side attached to air filter box

3. Open Power steering Tank cap and start sucking out fluid

Here is the color of my fluid that was in my car

4. After Sucking out the fluid from the tank. Time to go under the car and disconnect the cable coming from the Power steering rack. Like this

Place cable in a bowl

Let the fluid drain Keep cable inside the bowl now head to the top of the car

5. disconnect this cable

After disconnecting this cable i hooked another cable the same size to it.. And blew out the rest of the nasty power steering fluid.

^ ( You don't have to do number 5 but just to make sure everything is out )

6. ( Make sure you now plug back in cable number 5 ) Now Start Flushing out the old fluid by Pouring new fluid inside the tank.

7. Look through the motor area and look at the cable below that you disconnected before.. You will see old fluid starting to come out.. Keep pouring until you see new fluid ( Green ) pouring out.. THEN STOP

Should look like this

Nice and clean

8. Reconnect the cable under the car after all the nasty fluid is out..

9. ( Tricky Part ) Fill up the power steering tank.. Put cap on. Start the car for (three seconds ONLY) . Shut the car off.. Fill Tank back up. Do this 5 Times.

10. ( I had to do step 9 ) 5 times until my tank had no more air in the system or lines. I did have to suck a little fluid out because i had to much in.

Car steering is so much smoother..

The color of my old fluid VS my new fluid is just amazing..

Amber gold To Fresh Green

This is posted to help peeps

Well i did it about an hour ago. WOW is all i can say my fluid was darker then yours. flushed the system out and plan do to it again in two weeks again fully to make sure it is nice and clean. It made such a difference the steering feels completely different in a good way. Took me longer to get the drop light out and ramps and tools then it did to do the work. total time was 15 minutes i think. I used a medical syringe to get the fluid out with a giant needle (what i have access to moms a vet) and that worked really well. I recommend everyone to do this you can't really screw it up and it is so easy to do.

Yeah i was gonna say the same thing my car handles so different now.. So responsive.. Before it was hard to turn the wheel now its like nothing.. I'm still trying to get use to it driving at higher speeds.

You should have seen my ATF fluid haha i bet you would have dropped over out of your chair

I was at 102k Miles when this was changed just a note~

102k yeah i wonder what a good service interval for power steering fluid would be? I would say 60k would be ok 40k would be ideal what do you think? I did my transmission at 98k or so again at 115k and again at like 135k. I will also be doing it again around 155k (i am at 151k so close to the first high millage award i have been waiting for two years for this)
Glyn if you are out there do you know what SA recommends for power steering fluid because i like SA's intervals for stuff so much better then MBUSA.

Just seeing this. Great DIY, thanks

Does anyone know if the power steering fluid is like brake fluid? Does it absorb moisture? Should I open a new bottle or use the open one I have?

Thanks

Great write up.

Does anyone know what the factory recommends on the change interval?

Great DIY!!! I've never flushed power steering fluid before but it looks like I'll be doing it sooner rather than later.

Thanks!

BTW - cable = hose.

FYI, MB TSB says do not start the car to remove the air. Turn the wheel lock to lock "up to 30 times" is what it says before starting the car. I did it 10 times, checked the level, 10 more, check the level, repeat until the level doesn't go down any. Then start the car and go lock to lock at least 5 times and check the level. It shouldn't go down and you shouldn't see any bubbles.

MB Maintenance Manual doesn't list the interval for power steerig fluid change. So, that means PS fluid is "lifetime" :-) you know what that means...

after the fluid is changed, please remember to bleed [air out of] the system. Without starting the car, the steering wheel needs to be turned full lock-to-lock around 30 times. The only way to accomplish that without running the engine is to have the front end lifted (both front wheels off the ground). As you trun the steering lock-to-lock, you (second person) will see the bubbles coming up in the PS fluid reservoir. You stop turning the steering when the bubbles stop.

I have done this on my ML (same engine M112 as my 2004 C320).
