Angry Dead Alternator.....

C230 has only 16K and the Alternator is shot.. It just happened after the Head gasket replacement. Had to get the car towed to the dealer. Here are the problems it had so far:

-Panaroma sunroof won't open.
-BAS/ABS warning.
-Check engine warning.
-No first gear.
-Key not working.
-Blown head gasket.
-SC replaced.
-Dead Alternator.

I wonder if it is time to sell

To every thing there is a season

No, it's time to keep it!

Look at all the new parts your car is getting. You'll be way ahead of those with "reliable" cars because your parts are a year or more newer than theirs are.

Your suggestion that now might be the time to sell is not uncommon. If you're suffering losses now, now is not the time to "lock those losses in" by giving up on the car. Persevere and you will be rewarded. Sell and you will be hammered on depreciation.

For example, my Peugeot 405 had quite a bit of early warranty work done - new head, new rings, new water pump housing, new seatbelt, new O2 sensor, new Bosch Motronic ECU....the engine work was done at under 30,000 km.

Now at nearly 300,000 km, the car is totally reliable, almost unbelievably so. All the bugs were worked out and for 14 years it's been good solid, stylish transportation. this car will easily surpass 400,000 km, maybe 500K.

I suggest that this could happen to your car too.

Often times the installation is what makes the difference. Your engines are not made of unbreakabletanium. Each time you dig in to fix one thing, you have a chance of damaging something else. A tuner car is a different matter, but something you expect to have flawless reliablity as an everyday driver- I'd be getting a little nervous.

My old neighbor had a new engine put into his Celica GTS a few years ago after it developed serious engine oil consumption problems at less than 8K miles. That car was never the same again. He eventually dumped it because the number of problems. I told him at the time to demand a new car... 8000 miles is much too soon for a new motor.

After my car's engine was torn apart due to leaking gasket, I felt a loss of power when it was fixed. Yes, the car will never be the same again after a major repair. But what can I do? I don't have the extra cash to get a new one...

Not to sound (too) sarcastic, but if what you're saying is true, then Iceman should hope that everything else in his car eventually but **gradually** gets replaced under warranty... that means brakes, engine, tranny, suspension, emissions, body panels....

eventually he will have an entirely brand new car on his hands

quick! what's a 0.5*2002 + 0.05*2003 + 0.05*2004 + 0.4*2005???

Re: Dead Alternator.....

Sorry to hear about you alternator this time, Iceman.

I dunno, I think I'm a regular visitor at my dealer's service department: they routinely replace parts of my car. Minor things mostly (lately). Let's see, last week some plastic on the bottom of the seat, to get rid of squeaks there.
This monday I'm taking it in to have the roof rails replaced and the dr. window regulator replaced.

So it's always something

But overall I enjoy the car a lot, especially with the new 8.5" Evo wheels on the back (255mm tires) the handling has improved very noticably, esp. while cornering.

Hi Voyager, i guess i should not complain after reading your list. It is just i don't have time in my hands these days to take this car in to service all the time. It is just frustrating that's all. I really like the car also but getting a little worried what is going to be next?

Glad to hear that you like your new wheels. Has the wider wheel package improved your handling?

Quite a bit on the 'wine' list that appears to have been ordered by your waiter in error. A lot a misdiagnosis

Here's my list of problems @ 10K

Cracked "up" button steering wheel---> Replaced.

I look at a lot of these posts with dismay...my car has been rock solid- no squeeks, and an absolute joy to drive. My father in law owns a Lexus and a Boxster S - both have had numerous trips to the dealer since new- he's always surprised when we tell him "nope, no problems"

Yes, you're right, good part of my return visits were related to misdiagnosis or a service guy screwing up something else while fixing a problem.

Regarding ordering wrong parts, sometimes I even think they do that intentionally, to get more warranty $$$ from MB.
