Replacement bolts and torque specs (valve cover)?
Hi all,
I will be replacing the valve cover gaskets soon so I would like to know the torque specs of the valve and breather cover bolts. Also, where can I find replacement bolts (good ones) in case I F-up? I'm so terrible with bolts I break them on first sight.
Please help- 03 c240.

The aluminum bolts on those valve covers are very fragile, I think they shouls be torqued to 8Nm. Be VERY VERY careful. You probably will need to go to MB dealer for the replacement bolts.

What about valve cover gasket bolts? I was hoping to find replacement bolts online but so far nothing. Can the bolts be replaced with something steel and would I be able to find them at my local store?

I am sure you could just take one with you to the local hardware store and match it up to a "normal" bolt with the same thread pitch. The actual valve cover bolts seem to be fine as far as tightening them back down when you are done. It was the smaller ones that go on the breathers that use the smaller sized Torx bit that were so fragile i am surprised they don't break when you drop them :P

"annoyance" and "self-righteousness", amoung others...
I've never heard of using new bolts for valve covers... even w/ aluminum heads. Re-use them but it sounds like they require a very small amount of torque to be tight. My guess is that victor over tightened them? I hate friggin torx bolts anyway.

cpbeasley, i did not over tighten them, in fact i was halfway on the torque spec then it broke (one only)...My car has been running good, with 4,000 miles on it, no leaks =)

I've cleaned the breathing chambers and replaced valve covers on my ML320 as well as C320 - both M112 engines. I had no problem with those bolts. Knowing that they are very delicate, I handled them carefully.
On the other hand, if you break one or two, they shouldn't be that expensive at the dealer.
