Original service interval lost
The original service interval in my car was 15000km. This was norminal as the car monitored the oil conditon and adjusted this accordingly. What this meant was that in practice I could go to about 18000km between services.
For some reason, my (former) mechanic took it upon himself to change that to a fixed 10000km without discussing it with me. While I can reset the service interval indicator, this doesn't change it back to the original mode of operation, which I think is called Assyst?
Is there a DIY method to reset this, or do I need to pay a ransom to a dealer to do this?

Save the money
service it every 15kkm and just reset the servive light when it comes on.
Your now defunct mechanic probably had a star diagnostic tool and modified the interval in the menu.

"annoyance" and "self-righteousness", amoung others...
at your next service interval of choice, make sure the shop has star and Im sure theyll change it back free of charge.
sounds like your former mechanic was trying to unethically lure you back in more often for service.

See from my reset service indicator sticky.
I think you can get into that menu by following the same procedure to change oil type - option is a Star of course.
OK - Doors closed - Reset button in 7 O'clock position left of speedo (A) might have an 'R' printed on it, On steering wheel overlapping pages (B), button next to it (C), and button on top right hand side of steering wheel (D) - dont touch the phone buttons.
Ignition key to posn 1
Push B till mileage is displayed
Push A 3 times till it beeps
Ignition key to posn 2
Push C till message 'service display' is displayed
Push A once
'Oil type' will display
Push D till you have selected the oil spec you used - choices are 'standard', 'Qual 229.3' or 'Qual 229.5'
Push C
Message 'Confirm oil reset, press R button for 3 seconds
Push A for 3 seconds
Service confirmed will display
Push B till mileage is displayed
Ignition off
When you get to "service display" push A until distance is displayed & select 15,000Km & then continue as above.
I believe yours is an SA built car & 15,000Km was default. The Assyst was in fact bypassed.
Good luck

As for the former mechanic, his unethical behaviour is exactly the reason he won't see me back again. It's a shame because I think he really knows what he's doing. Car always ran great after he serviced it. I just can't trust him anymore and I don't do business with people I don't trust. I might have to consider going back to a dealer, which I hate because they are a ripoff, but at least they are setup to do the job properly.

Thanks. I tried that, but unfortunately couln't get to the options that allowed me to select Km. I know for a fact that Assyst used to work before the rogue mechanic got to it. After a service, the indicator showed 15000km, but in fact I was able to get to approx. 18000km before it showed "due now".

Yes - possible - cars for SA market are set at hard 15,000 Km - it's more than possible that cars destined for Aus still had Assyst active.
Sorry I could not get you to the correct menu. I've never had to do it. I have a feeling it's possible but I don't know the button sequence.
If you had Assyst get it reactivated with Star.

I think that sounds like the best plan.

haha you are an optimist trey. Im thinking that unless the mechanic had been doing blackstone lab testing on his oil for free of charge to come to the conclusion he needed an earlier service interval, then I cant think of any reason why he'd lower the interval by 5000km?

I would honestly ask him about it maybe he was trying to do you a favor? maybe not but i would give him a chance to explain himself even if you still never want to use him again. I had something similar happen on a friends car i has helping him with. The dealer changed out a part to an upgraded part for like $50 more then the normal one. I asked him about it and he had a dam good reason for doing so.

Don't worry Trey - there are some very decent people out there. I appreciate your optimistic "glass half full" demeanour. As I think others do.

I haven't seen anything like that in the DAS menu. I'll take a look and see but I think as Glyn mentioned somehow you can change it by selecting oil type. Maybe he didn't do it on purpose but selected something stupid on the menu?
