Final Tire Update (really)
This is the last installment: Thank you!! Lynn for posting those tread pictures... I printed them out and went to pick up my car from the dealer, and yes! the tire ordered from Discount WAS the A/S, which was totally WRONG. I didn't know that the car came with the regular Pilot Sports, and since the car was in the dealership I couldn't check the difference between them till today. The problem was that Discount said, on Tuesday, that the tire specs changed, which was totally bogus, and that the regular Pilot Sport was not available anymore. The dealer service guy didn't pursue it further. When I figured out what happened, I called Discount and they said that the A/S is the newer type and will eventually replace the regular Pilot Sport. I told them I want the same tire that's already on the three other wheels and all of a sudden the tire became available.
Obviously when they ordered the original tire they looked on the computer and picked the first Pilot Sport that came up, without LOOKING at my car to see what's already on there. I am totally disgusted with the whole situation. They said it was an "honest mistake." Whatever. Now I have all four tires the same. Yay. But I want to thank all of you because your feedback made me suspicious of the situation, which made me check it out further. I would have taken Discount's word for it, especially since the dealer didn't help at all. Thanks again!

Just another way that these boards are very helpful to the members on them. glad you were able to get some good constructive help Margo!!

Black C230 Kompressor Coupe
Spare Tire
I was driving the other day and I ran over a huge rock that was on the road. I was going too fast to avoid it. Instantly I knew the tire was flat.
I'm now driving around with the spare tire that was in the trunk of the car because the new tire had to be ordered and I have no idea when it's coming in. Is it ok for me to have that spare tire on the car for this long? Will any part of the car be damaged?
Please reply! Thanks...

MB coupe.
If you are driving on that crappy inflat-a-spare in the coupe, then I am sure there are some speed, and maybe load limitations.
I don't like that set-up, but I guess they were squeezed for room. at least the rim is alloy, and fine looking in it's own way.

On our tempory spare it says not to exceed 50 MPH.

You pay that kind of money and you have no spare ? What marketing genius thought of that one ? If the C32 had run-flat tires I could understand but that is just ridiculous.

You don't get a spare tire with a Corvette, either. I have more problems with slow leaks in tires than blow-outs, so the compressed gas cans should work fine to reinflate most tires.
I had a 300ZX with the inflata-spare. I had to use it twice, and it worked great each time. When you take the air out of it, it retracts to its folded state. I've seen the Coupe spare, and it outwardly looks to be the same design.
I recall it had some limitations on speed, how many miles you can use it safely, etc. But who's going to go racing with a spare tire (of any type) installed, right? People would laugh you off the strip if you showed up with three fat tires and a donut.

That's been a huge point of debate/frustration/questioning/anger with C32 owners.
It's possible to buy a new front wheel/tire and use it, but that costs like $500 or so.
Supposedly the new E (W211) will be the same way.
They have a can of (probabaly very expensive) fix-a-flat goo in the trunk.
I guess you're just supposed to hold tight and push the "SOS" button on TeleAid!
But really, in 25 years of driving, I've personally used a spare tire -
Once.
So I'm not too worried about it. I'm more worried about dinging a rim because of the low-profile tires.

easy up there with the spare in the C32
thats a sore subject for some of us.... Im gettin a spare very soon since I scratched one of my rims that now becomes the spare. But not till I need to replace the tires. Till then if I get stuck I just have to use the SOS button. We have the GOOP that we put in the tire and use the compressor to put the air back in. Like I said, Im gettin a spare..... soon.

Are you saying they supply the little air pump for the C32 ? I thought the coupe was the only car with the pump since it has that collapsible tire. Do the other C-class models have the pump also ?

The C32 comes with an electric pump, a bottle of fix-a-flat gunk, and a jack. It is all packaged in a cute foam thingie that fits in where the spare tire would normally go.

On my CLK430 the front and rear rims are different widths as well as the tires. But i have a full size spare with that car. I have 245/40 ZR17 on the rear. And 225/45 ZR17 on the front.
I belive the spair is a 225/45/ ZR17.

Get your tires from Costco, they can usually order anything you need and come with lifetime balancing and rotation provided you come in about every 7500 miles to get them balanced. plus it usually costs less to get them from Costco.

Out Of Control!!

I'm the proud owner of a set of S-03s (Lynn's off a little on the name
). They are such an improvement over the Contis; I'm as happy as a pig in sh*t.
I'd recommend them without reservation. Don't know how they compare to the Michelins, but would hazard a guess that the S-03s are better than them as well.
