Kumho Extas are repotedly very good tires at a lower price than most other tires. Tirerack has a good page on what tires fit on what size wheels.

Best Tire On the Market?

Hey I've got the C240 with stock wheels. I've heard that the ride can be improved by using better quality tires. I'm not trying to get better performance, I probably drive like all of our Grandmas.

I just want something that is more quiet and smooth, if thats possible? I'd appreciate your opinions please. Otherwise, I'll trust some tire guy that will probably try to sell me the most expensive rather than the one best suited to my car and my needs.

Thanks,

Richard

Where in Houston are you? I have a C240 as well - 6 spd. Where did you purchase yours from?

I find the handling to be more than adequate as is. You would probably benefit more from a handling perspective (at trade off to ride comfort) by going with 17" wheels instead of 16" wheels.

Well its my first new car, my last car was a complete piece of sh*t. So as far as handling it feels great to me. But, I hate noise, so my main objective is to reduce any noise, perhaps even a smoother ride.

I bought at Mercedes Greenway (59 @ Edloe). Where did you get yours?

I bought mine at MB Houston North as I live and work on the northside. Did you get Michelin's on your car? That's what's on mine. They seem pretty quiet to me. I would stay away from Goodyear, and haven't heard too many good reviews on Continental. I had Dunlop's on my Audi that were grippy and pretty quiet SP8000's I think.....

I have a 2001 C240/6Speed - got 17" AMG split spoke wheels/staggered set - 225/45/17 F and 245/40/17 R Continental Sport Contacts - the tires are okay. I have about 13000 miles on them and not that much wear - I do not drive that aggressively. I think I will get the Bridgestone S0-3's next. Also debating on the Toyo T1-S.

Right now I have the Continentals....what have you heard about the Goodyears?

I bought at Greenway since I live way out in the suburbs SE of houston. It's the closest one to me.

Depends.

If you can deal with rubber that wears fast, but sticks like glue and inclement weather (a lot of it) is not too much of an issue... Toyo Proxes - HANDS DOWN. These are pretty quiet, very sticky and superb ride.

If you need a general purpose with some wet weather and can deal with fast wear, SO3's are the way to go.

I've had both and as soon as the new Michelin Pilots (suck) wear out I'll be going back to Toyos.

One of the fringe benefits on Toyo, btw, is that they're significantely cheaper than the big boys.

RjamesC240, call Scott Wilkerson at Discount tire on Ella (inside 610 loop) 713-861-9747 he can hook you up and recommend the nicest tires you need, tell him Alfonso sent you and he'll give you a great deal (FYI I don't make money off of this)
I'd personally would go with Kuhmos 712, cheap, really quiet, lots of grip, excellent cornering, really good on wet pavement, thread life is OK, but for the price and performance you get out of them tires you can afford 20k miles thread life.

He has put tires on my 99 Vette, 96 Suburban, 96 Impala SS, wheels on my 99 Vette, 99 E55, 96 Suburban, really honest guy! thrust me you'll be more than satisfied with service and price.

Me too. I live in College Station though. I originally was going to purchase my c230k from MB Houston North but my salesman told me that my credit was bad and my apr would be about 15%! (my credit is great) I went to MB Greenway and was treated like a king by Mendel Cheng.

Road noise generated by tire design has a lot to do with the quality of the road surface. You have no control about this so it is likely that any tire you choose will be quiet on some roads and noisy on others. Turn up the radio instead.

You are right, but I have the Bridgestone Potenzas RE730 and they are by far the noisiest tires I've ever had (they came with the car) in every type of road surface, the quieter they get is when I drive on pavement (the black one ) and they are still noisy even then. The quietest tire I've ever har are those kuhmos 712 and also the best overall.

I wonder if I get Kumho's at Discount tire I can take them back if I don't like them after a few days ?? anyone know how that works ? I have heard good stuff about Kumho's as well - but also S03's are supposed to be great.

I just want a quiet / comfy / cushy / long treadlife tire - I don't race my car and don't need max traction.

Talk to Scot and discount tire (look at the numbers ealier on this thread), ask him if he could do that for you. i don't know but asking won't hurt.

I've had my Yoko's from Discount Tire... they rubbed slightly on the rear openings and after 4 days of use they exchanged them for another tire - no penalty. Great folks to deal with - of course your local store may offer different service quality.

Plus, they only had the senior guys work on my car because I had a 'nicer' car with 'better' wheels than the average DT customer.

P

P.S. If you are getting new rubber, I HIGHLY recommend the SmarTire pressure monitor system. It rocks!

You're not looking for performance so

I assume you want something that lasts a long time, is quiet, performance is OK and tracks well in the rain because, well, you're in Houston.

The Michelin MXV4 Energy is a good tire. Good not great.

The S-03s and Pilots and Kumhos (not terribly quiet from people I know) are all in the performance line, the first two will wear at about 20-22k.

Go to TireRack.com -- they have reviews, both professional and from consumers. That website is very good for getting you needed info.

You also might look at the Michelin Pilot A/S -- it is an all season tire that should last (tread rating at 400, I believe)and has some performance features (but not in the class of Pilot Sports) but are really expensive, about $200/ tire -- but check at tirerack as prices do go down. I also think that Bridgestone has something new other than the S-03 (great tire) for your driving style - check tirerack

I'm late to this thread. My car came equipped with Pirelli P6's. They seem to be very quiet, but I don't have the windows open very often to tell. You can't hear them at all when the windows are closed. They seem to be wearing well, also.

u should ask luke down in the tire section...or visit either tirerack.com or tires.com. most high performance tires like the s-03 or pilot sport will be quite noisy compared to other touring tires...
