By breaking even you are assuming the retail value of the tire and not the cost.

Why don't they require a warranty on all four tires? How do they know which tire is the one with a warranty?

Yeah, didn't want to get too complicated. I also assumed that if only 25% of the customers ever came in they also only need a replacement on one occasion for every set of four tires.

Also, probably about 90% of tires retail (let alone cost) less than this, so an $8 dollars a tire warranty is making them plenty of money.

Cheers, BT

Well, I got the tire, which, for Steve S, is a 225/45 17 ZR. I got it for $226 out the door, and they rotated my tires. I ended up getting the warranty on all four tires, for SFC 320's question. I read the fine print and it IS free replacement. I paid about $30 per tire, and I got it because of the expense of the tires. Usually they only would warranty the tire you purchase but because I go there often they gave me the warranty on all four. Or so they say I looked at the original tire and it was trashed inside. The nail was close to the edge of the tire and I must have driven on it a long time because it was a mess. So,end of story for now.

I also had a screw in my tyre (Michelin Pilot, C7). Took it into MB dealer, waited about 1.5 hrs. Got the car back washed, cleaned and tyre repaired, all for about 52$. At the time I noticed something was wrong, the tyre wasn't completely flat, but you could definitely tell that something was wrong with the tracking.

Try http://1010tires.com/
I bought a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin winter tires (R.I.P. due to the fire) from them in January (good price shipped fast)
I can't the P7000 in 235/35/19 listed, but give them a call if you want.

Tire trouble

Remember last week I had a run flat and went to Discount Tire to have it replaced? Well, today I brought the car to the dealer for a number of things, one of which is the right-pull-veer thing. They just called me and informed me that Discount put the wrong size tire on the car. How can that be? Wouldn't the tire that fits be the right size tire? Feedback, pleez?

Many sizes of tire will fit onto a wheel. It is very possible Discount put the wrong tire on your car.

yep...there you have it... the 17 X 7.5 from my knowledge can go up to 235/45 fine or smaller like 215/50 something like that...so it is very possible the Discount guy is a moron that didn't even check the other tire's sizes.

Margo, "tire size" has several parts to it. The most obvious is the diameter of the wheel opening, usually 15", 16", 17" etc. But, there can be many tires of say 16" that will fit a wheel, and this is where your problem probably lies. The other 2 factors are tread width and "profile", which is expressed as a ratio between sidewall height and diameter (I'm pretty sure this is right, but some of the more expert tire guys will correct me if I'm wrong.) These tire size components are stamped on the sidewall of all passenger car tires. For example, my C240 uses P205/55R16. The 205 is tread width in millimeters, 16 is the wheel size and 55 is the profile (and R means radial). Check one of your original tires and the new one and you can see where the difference is.

Any tire dealer knows all of this information very well, and to sell someone the wrong size is inexcusable. Based on other information you told us about Discount Tire, personally, I would never use them again, at least not that franchise.

There is a lesson to be learned here. Be an informed consumer. When you are getting a replacement tire make sure that you are getting what you paid for. Do not leave this responsiblilty to someone else. Its your money.

OK... update.... Discount DID NOT sell me the wrong size tire... according to them, Michelin changed the specs on the tire and it is correct.. I saw them order the same exact tire that was flat off the computer, and that is the tire that came in. I haven't yet heard from the dealer this morning, but according to Discount the difference is like 4 millimeters. I think the difference is in the tire tread, but I may be wrong. Will keep you posted!

That's a scary thought. But it is a fact that tires marked with the same "size" can actually measure differently between manufacturers and models. One would think that if a manufacturer changes the spec, they'll change the model name of the tire to avoid ths confusion...
Guess not?

I don't buy this. I think someone is pulling a fast one. If the manufacturer changed the specifications of the tire they would have to get a new DOT certification. Either you got the exact same tire or you didn't.

Margo, you've got your receipt, right? It should list the tire spec -- what is it? Pxxx/xxR16.

EDIT: When your dealer said the tire place sold you the wrong tire, I don't think they went and measured the tread for exact width. I think they meant the overall spec was wrong, either the Pxxx (like 205, 215, etc) or the profile (55, 60, etc).

See Garage
I probably shouldn't admit this, but I drove nearly 10,000 miles on a "set" of 225/60/R16's on my 300ZX, before taking it back to Discount Tire for a rotation. Found out one of the tires was actually a 205 (RR no less!). I whipped out my Discount Tire receipt for the tire purchase, and they replaced the undersize tire with a new 225, no questions asked.

I'm still embarrassed that I didn't notice it sooner. So, yes, it's good practice to inspect your new tires to be certain they are what you bought and paid for.

MarkL, I don't need the receipt, the tire is 225/45 ZR 17 90Y Dir Michelin Pilot Sport AS. That's what was on the car, and that's what was ordered. The tire that came in IS the correct tire; the specs were changed by Michelin. Discount Tire informed the dealer, and I am keeping the tire on the car.

The first picture is the Pilot Sport our cars came with. The second picture is the Pilot Sport A/S. If three of your tires look like the first picture and the tire from Discount Tire looks like the second picture, Discount Tire put the wrong tire on your car.
