what speakers would you recommend?

I am looking to upgrade my 2002 C240 stock speakers with something that sounds better (with good bass) but does not require installing an amp or subwoofer in the back. Does anyone have any suggestions? also please tell me how much they cost you and where you had it installed. thx.

personally, i've always liked diamond audio speakers... i currently have diamond hex speakers in my car but i have an amp powering them. i would probably just go with one of their lower/middle end speakers like the m6 or m3 if you're not going to use an amp.

http://www.diamondaudio.com/

i think the best thing to do though, is to listen to a few different speakers yourself since sound is very subjective.

MB Quart and Infinity both make VERY nice speakers....best freq. response I've heard.
JBL's have more punch but sound a little muddy in the mids....
Avoid Alpine (and other cheap) speakers...

Good speakers require a good amp to drive them to sound good. I wouldn't drop too much coin on speakers if you are going to stick with the factory amp.

Best speakers, IMO, are Dynaudio and Focal Utopia, but I wouldn't try to drive them off of the factory amps.

I'm not sure you accomplish much of anything without installing an amp or a headunit with a more powerful amp inside.

As far as speakers, I installed MB Quarts in the front and cheaper Alpines in the rear. The MBQs sound seriously good, and the rear speakers are so muffled in the coupe that they aren't worth spending a lot of money on.

The best one is MB Quart!

I ordered my car with the Bose option, just took delivery on last Wednesday. The Bose option is absolute garbage, the Harman Kardon option in my BMW sounded so much better! Looks like I have to replace them with (you guess it!) - MB Quart!!!

I agree with kingkong
I would go with Focal Speakers and for a Sub Go with an ID-Q or an ID-MAX for a sub.

Ultimate Audiophile System for New C Classes. Infiniti Kappa Speakers: 5.25' Separates w/ Crossovers, 6' rear speakers, 10' Perfect 10 Subwoofer. 700 Watt 5-Channel Orion Amplifier. Kenwood Excelon 5V Preout Head Unit. All Pieces are the latest top of the line models. I also have a custom ported box that fits factory flush into the new C Classes, replacing the old Bose Subwoofer. I also have a mounting kit for the head unit. After installation is complete, everything looks factory. I am willing to e-mail pics of the subwoofer box and head unit. This system is only 1 week old, literally. If you are in the LA area, I am willing to demo the system. The sound is really incomparable to the Bose system. All parts come with a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer. I bought this stuff from Goldstar Audio in Irvine. Serious Buyers only. Asking Price $1500.00. Contact Info: Alankang3000@aol.com

I would definately suggest Diamond Audio, Eclipse or MB Quart. If you are on a low budget go with Infinity or Kenwood.

There is NO WAY that you can get good sound from a pair of speakers (no matter expensive or cheap) if you are not getting an amp and change the HU. It will be a waste.

MB Quart is a bit out, Focal is one of the best in the market now. The most important thing is: how much do you want to spend.

I agree with Harris on this one. I tried better speakers and they actually sounded worse than stock. What you need to add more warmth, richness and fullness to the sound along good thumping bass is a different HU. Check out the MB Audio 10, it's sounds great, a huge difference in sound, you would be amazed and it's about $200-300. Another way to go is Comand Navigation, about half way in sound quality between the stock radio and the Audio 10. Even with a decent head unit, you are not going to be able to effectively drive these high end speakers with any HU so realistically you are looking at a mininum of $1,500 for speakers/amp to make it sound better and even then it still might not sound as good as the Audio 10 from Mercedes.

While we're on the subject of speakers, my '05 230 sedan has the premium Harmon/Kardon sound system and I've been getting some vibration out of my front left speaker in the door.

The speaker itself is definitely not blown. It just sounds like plastic is vibrating. It's lower frequency than a buzz, but higher frequency than a rattle. I get it when there is moderately heavy bass in my audio. It's not like ridiculously deep bass, though, so I don't think I should be hearing the vibration, particularly since the right-side speaker doesn't make the same noise.

Is this something I can take care of myself by tightening a screw or the plastic grill over the speaker? Is it easy to remove the plastic grill over the speaker to take a look underneath?

I can always take it to the dealer, but sometimes I like to be able to fix little things myself if it is possible. Thanks for any tips.
