2007 C230 4-year summary including total cost of ownership.

As of last week, I have owned my 2007 C230 for 4 years. Here is a quick summary of events:

December 13, 2006:
  • Ordered my 2007 C230 from my local dealer with the following options:
    • 2007 C230 Sport Sedan base price: $29,650.
    • 768 - Diamond Black Metallic Paint: $680.
    • 427 - 7sp Automatic: $1,390.
    • 324- Sunroof Pkg: $1,790.
    • 319 - Lighting Pkg: $790.
    • 873 - Heated Seats: $680.
    • 275 - Pwr Driver's seat and steering column: $600.
    • 057 - Ipod integration: $375.
    • Total Retail Price: $36,730.00

After an agonizing over 3 month wait, my car was finally delivered to me on March 27, 2007. It has definitely been an eventful 4 years with the car, as most of you know. So, here is the detailed summary:

Warranty issues resolved by my dealer:
  • Rattle from seat belt tensioners took three tries to remedy. Was remedied by lots of adhesive backed felt.
  • Rattle from ashtray fixed with adhesive backed foam and felt.
  • Rattle/buzzing from instrument cluster fixed with adhesive backed felt.
  • Rattle/buzzing from radio area fixed with cable ties, felt wrap, of harness behind radio, and harness in engine compartment.
  • Control arm bushings replaced at ~30K from complaint of popping in front end. Did not fix the problem, but tightened up the front end a little bit.
  • Cross strut assemblies, inner and outer tie rods, and steering rack assembly replaced to fix popping issue in front end. Cross strut assemblies, and tie-rods were not the issue, it was the steering rack, but dealer surprisingly left those new parts in.
  • Cup holder assembly replaced twice due to pealing of chrome accents.
  • TCU and ECU flashed twice for transmission shifting issues.
  • Instrument cluster coded for Ipod integration that wasn't done at the factory, since the Ipod interface was inoperable.

Repairs performed to date:
  • Passenger side intake camshaft solenoid replaced due to P0012 code. This is a known issue with the M272 engine.
    • Date: 5/26/10
    • Mileage: 68740
    • Cost: $14.95
  • Fuel pump/seal ring replacement, due to failure of the fuel pump.
    • Date: 1/29/11
    • Mileage: 82361
    • Cost: $231.29
  • Crankshaft position sensor replaced. Sensor was not bad, replaced as preventative, during no start troubleshooting, since part was known superseded part.
    • Date: 1/29/11
    • Mileage: 82361
    • Cost: $50.00
  • Hood switch replaced. Intermittant hood open messages appeared since new several times. Of course, it never failed while in for warranty work.
    • Date: 3/28/11
    • Mileage: 85001
    • Cost: $6.90

Total Repair Costs: $303.14

Maintenance:
  • Oil changes (9) – $730.32
  • 3 sets of rear tires, and 1 set of fronts - $1617.96
  • Transmission services (2) - $479.93
  • Wheel alignment - $125.00
  • Cabin air filters (6) - $123.84
  • Wiper blade sets (2) - $80.00
  • Air filter set - $29.38
  • MAF cleaning: $6
  • Brake fluid flush: $11.40

Total Maintenance Costs: $3203.83

Fuel:
  • 84784 Miles
  • 3744.96 Gallons of fuel
  • 25.11 MPG Premium Lifetime
  • 19.71 MPG E85 Lifetime
  • 22.63 MPG combined Lifetime
  • 29.20 MPG Best
  • 16.99 MPG Worst

Total Fuel Costs: $10,759.42 Cost of Fuel

Tools purchased for repairs and maintenance:
  • Oil Filter Wrench: $42.65
  • 722.9 transmission fill adapter: $37.91
  • 722.9 standoff drift: $14.50
  • STAR clone $550.00
  • MB Service DVD: $79.92
  • Pneumatic oil extractor: $119.99

Total tool costs: $724.98

*Note: I am a massive tool *****

Miscellaneous expenses:
  • Windshield replacements (2), and 1 repair: $560.
  • Front bumper respray from rock chips: $500
  • Oil analysis kits (3) : $60.33

Total Miscellaneous expenses: $1060.00

Modifications:
  • Huber Optic Tint: $450
  • Euro Impact strips $178.
  • Coding: $150.
  • LED license plate bulbs: $20
  • Silverstar Signal bulbs: $12
  • LED city lights: $15

Total Modifications: $825.00

TOTAL COST SUMMARY: $16876.37

Don't ever add that number up Ok, since that number is already up there, let's add insurance of $3250.30. That makes it:

TOTAL COST SUMMARY: $20126.67 Broke the $20K mark!

Overall, I am still happy with my purchase. It has been a little trying lately, but I still do love the car. Looking forward to the 100K milestone later this year. Only cost not in there is depreciation which can be a little tricky to accurately measure.

Some notes about the summary:

I will need new front tires in the next 5K miles. I will be doing the following in the near future; rear differential fluid change, spark plug change, and brake fluid flush. Still waiting for the original front brake pads to wear out!!! All repairs and maintenance besides the alignment and 1 transmission service were done by me, so there are no labor costs in there.

*Posted to the main forum for more views, but will eventually merge this with my thread.

Great read Sir. It was one of your threads that helped me make up my mind and get my C230. Best of luck on your latest issue.

So your car does have full leather interior? Also kinda sad that the $20k plus figure ownership cost doesn't include the price of the car. Damn cars are expensive.

I should calculate my total ownership costs in my nearly 3 years.

Edit: I can't calculate fuel costs since I have never kept up with it.

That's really not all that bad! The last Honda I owned cost me >$20,000 just for repairs over the course of three years... that's why I'm not a Honda fan. Also, considering that you did a LOT of preventative maintnance, it's likely to last you a very long time.

No, it doesn't have the leather package. I copied that from my 1st post in my thread. I never went back and changed it when I decided against it. The 2007 C230 brochure says all MB tex as standard on all 2007 C-classes. But, as I pointed out to you once, my car has MB Tex and leather seating surfaces, as confirmed on my datacard from MB.

Nope, doesn't include the price of the car. If I remember correctly, I paid just over $30K for mine.

Yeah, I echo Matt $20K in repairs on a Honda is 3 years is crazy.

Just over $30k is not bad for your relatively loaded model. My 05 C230K stickered at $34,800.

I have my original sticker and it is listed at $36,730. I need to scan that and add it to the thread, as well as some pictures in progression like your thread.

Sorry guys, not the Odyssey, it was an Accord. Was great until a month after the warranty expired, then it was CV joints, drive shafts, antenna motor, timing chain, A/C, radio, and every other thing that could possibly go wrong...

Oh yeah so you got a good deal! I paid $19,500 for mine with 25k miles in July of 08. I don't have the original window sticker. Yes do the scan and post up progression pictures!!

Mike - Even worse. Antenna motor? So it couldn't have been newer than 1995.

Astute observation. It was a 1991, that I bought in the summer of 1992. It was the first car I ever bought all on my own. I paid it off in the summer of 1993 (I hate debt), and due to the cost of repairs had to finance the next car I bought too If we start to figure out the early '90s money vs today's money it becomes even more grim...

Lifelong Accord enthusiast here until the 2008 complete F-up and general Honda-needs-to-be-put-in-a-padded-cell era.

I'll send you a PM.. we're gonna get banned by John for this on his thread.

To steer it back on topic..

John, IIRC, did you have some sort of Bi-X issue also when you were under warranty? They weren't auto-levelling on their own? Or was that a dealership mishap with the replacement of the front suspension parts and steering rack?

Matt, good memory That was a dealership screwup. When they replaced the steering rack, they forgot to plug-in the leveling sensor on the front swaybar, before starting. So, I had to take it back and have them re-zero the leveling sensor. When that sensor is not is sync, the "limp mode" setting, is to dip the beams all the way down. I could only see light about 5 feet in front of me
